Most of us have accepted the fact that our children will gleefully celebrate this holiday by gorging themselves on every kind of cavity-inducing candy known to man. Sneak in a little goodness with this crunchy, nut-filled snack or cereal.

Goblin granola

Ingredients

4 cups old-fashioned oats
1 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup pecans, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup slivered almonds
1/4 cup shelled sunflower seeds
1 cup raisins (optional)
8 Tbs. honey
1/2 cup canola oil
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg

Preparation

Preheat oven to 225 degrees.

In a large bowl, stir together oats, wheat germ, pecans, walnuts, almonds and sunflower seeds. In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the honey and oil, heat until the honey liquefies. Add the vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg and stir well.

Drizzle the honey mixture over the oat mixture and, using your hands or a large spoon, rub mixture together until all of the ingredients are thoroughly coated. Turn out the mixture onto a baking sheet and spread it evenly. Bake until a deep golden brown, about 2 hours, stirring every 20 minutes to ensure even cooking. Remove from the oven and let cool completely. Serve as a snack or for breakfast with yogurt and fruit. Makes 6 servings.
