I am so disappointed. Great student base, too bad it's packed into old, hot classrooms and taught by teachers unwilling to teach all the core subjects. Second grade is the exception. I am now homeschooling.

Curriculum is not aligned within grade levels, let alone across grade levels. Unfortunately, the principal lacks the backbone needed to effectively manage his staff. He has teachers unwilling to work with others to get the curriculum aligned. The facility is old (50+ years) and in need of electrical upgrades to accommodate the installation of A/C's which the parents are willing to purchase. Electrical is also needed to upgrade the computer lab, which has only 15 computers for use with classes of 30+ kids. Kids are required to work in cafe, library and office for extended periods of time, taking them from precious instruction time. This school has the least number of instruction days that I've ever seen and those that they have are short. We have now joined 120+ families homeschooling kids on and near Hickam AFB.

Quite a few classrooms at Hickam Elementary had 28+ students for the 2003-2004 school year. I think that is too many children in an un-air-conditioned classroom for them to excel. I'd like to see the Principal let us know what needs to be done to get a cap put on class sizes in Hawaii. The PTO at Hickam is awesome! Parent volunteers truly make Hickam Elementary a great school!
