Because the faculty, parents and students are one big family- very friendly and helpful. In addition, the teachers are excellent and go above and beyond- working on weekends to create stages for plays that their students are in, volunteering their time, advocating for important causes, educating the youth on issues such as preserving the environment, physical health, and emotional well-being.
Major changes occurred during the 2006-07 school year involving leadership and parent involvement. The incoming Principal and newly appointed parent coordinator work diligently to improve the quality of education and parent involvement in the school. Curriculum additions for the 2007-08 school year include Science, and Music and Fine Arts. Math Investigations will be used in mathematic instruction. Monthly parent workshops, family activities and community/school wide events support student learning, achievement & academic success.
The level of parent involvement/support is extremely low. Many of them rely on the teachers to carry the majority of the responsibility to educate their children. Hopefully with the support of our new principal, more parents will get involved (PTA, school functions, etc.)and take a more active role in their child's education.
I would highly recommend Pauoa School to any parent who is searching for a school that focuses on helping every child to reach his/her potential and focusing on the 'whole child.' We have had 2 sons receive an excellent education at Pauoa- over a span of 14 years that we have been associated with the school. Parents do make a difference by participating on the PTA,School Community Council, and volunteering on special projects. Hawaiian is taught by the kupuna at all grade levels, PTA sponsored Reflections program involves music, art & literacy that all grades participate in. Tutoring for math and literacy for students are offered for students' needing extra supports. A supportive and positive learning environment. If more parents participated, more resources could come to the school. That is the key to a successful school - high parent involvement.
The level of parent involvement is very low. We have just gotten a new principal so hopefully she will help to get the school back on track and bring the focus back on the kids. The quality of the academic programs are okay. If you want a school that gives a lot of homework, this school is not for you. There are no foreign language offerings here or a music program. And there are no extracurricular activities offered at the school. There are a few good teachers at Pauoa but it is the luck of the draw if your child gets a good teacher or not. Also, the library is not a place where the children enjoy going. Pauoa definitely needs a lot of changes done. Currently, I would not recommend this school to anyone. I am hopeful that the new principal will improve the school.
Academically this is not a bad school, but parent involvement is low. A few excellent teachers. Music, art, and sports programs are pretty much non-existent. Not much area for the kids to play during recess. Good principal and staff. Both my children have recieved a good eductaion here at Pauoa Elementary.
great schooling. Nice 'home town' community feeling. Kind and loving teachers & staff!!
