Kapaa HS made two major changes this year to help curb poor attendance and help teachers to control the students' behaviors in the classroom. They tied the student behavior (glo's) to their participation in extra-curricular activities in addition to the 2.0 gpa rule. They also started a program called 'ace'. They remove disruptive students from the classroom and put them in an isolated environment where they stay until they 'relearn' how to behave in a class setting. All they do is sit there and do work. No talking, no walking around, and their lunch is brought to them. Believe me, when my son was placed in the room, I went ballistic at first, but I told him to stay there and deal with it. It was the best thing ever. He refuses to go back, and is now on time to his classes and behaves in class. Thank you Kapaa!

fyi: the only reason why kauai high tested higher was because the SpEd students were weighed differently and not all of them took the HCPS II test. All Kapaa high students that are SpEd took the same tests that the honors and ap students took.

About the tests

In 2009-2010 Hawaii used the Hawaii State Assessment (HSA) to test students in grades 3 through 8 and 10 in reading and math. The HSA is a standards-based test that measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Hawaii. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level on the test.
