Kihei Public Charter School2

Kihei Charter School has some great teachers, but the leadership and communication is less than desirable. The curriculum and websites the students and parents must use to determine assignments lack cohesion and can be very confusing. General communications are all listed in their website which must be checked daily or you will miss what's going on. Send your child here only if you have ample time to assist them in figuring out what is required of them.
I think the other, older reviews are based on the middle school program. The high school program is TERRIBLE. Only 65% of students graduate on time. (Don't take my word for it; look at the ARCH reports for this school. The facilities are dismal: dirty, makeshift rooms with no windows or exterior doors in an industrial complex. The administration is incompetent: no leadership, poor to NO communication with parents, no support for students other than a suggestion to "Read the handbook". The teachers have potential! Many seem to be well-educated and well-intentioned but are limited by a heavy workload, poor facilities, and the aforementioned lack of leadership. Sadly, they emphasize outcome over process and they do not fulfill the objectives and goals they claim. Check their fail/retention/dropout rate. THIS SCHOOL HORRIBLE. SEND YOUR CHILD ONLY IF YOU WANT TO PUNISH HIM/HER.
If you are lucky enough to get in, you will be very happy. The teachers are amazing and it is clear that they love to teach and really care about the kids. Their TEAMS program stands for Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, Science. This is truly one of the best schools on Maui.
This is an excellent school where instead of simply reading about science, the students go out and get their hands wet! They collect data for UH and for NOAA through partnerships, and have a student-teacher ratio of 14-1, which means no student falling through the cracks. Lots of flexibility and individualization to enable students to reach their maximum potential. Highly recommended!
