We are a military family and my 3 children feel very comfortable, safe, and happy at Mililani Waena. We haven't felt any racial, military or cultural prejudice here. My children were reading in kindergarten. The office administration is very kind and friendly, I always feel welcome when I walk into the office. The school nurse is very knowledgable and friendly. Setting meetings with the counselors and principles is fast and we have been able to solve any issues from bullying (teasing, hair pulling) to childhood fears/anxiety (deployments/loss of loved ones). They have an open door policy and issues are resolved in a very timely manner. The teachers are what really make this school 5 stars though, they care about each and every one of their students. Mrs. Dickinson and Mrs. Takara have been working at the school for a long time, they are the best teachers I have ever met, their skills and patience is remarkable. Their hearts are in it for the children. I think they set the bar for the other teaxhers because we have had many and they are all simply wonderful. There are a lot of parent volunteers and a real feeling of family with this school. School is in session for 5-6 hours. The pod systems are not ideal, a large room divided into 4 rooms furniture. It is noisy and distracting at times. There is usually a good breeze and the class will be 70-80 degrees other days it reaches over 90. Since there is no airconditioning the kids sweat like crazy during school hours on hot days. There are many fans and the buildings are kept well and aspestos free. Lunch time is only 20 minutes long, half my kids enjoy school lunch while the other half prefers home lunch. Recess is usually held on cement courts where there have been many injuries, including broken bones and head injuries. There is a huge lovely grass area next to the courts that should be utilized more frequently. It would be better have indoor recess than on cement where there are countless serious injuries. P.E. is only twice a month outside but with school getting out so early there is time for many extracurricular activities. The grounds are upkept beautifully. There is a large library and every child has a laptop in class. The school is safe and fun, the staff is amazing, it is an older building, and academic success will depend on parent participation at home.

My son attended Mililani Waena from Kindergarten to 3rd grade. As a educator myself, I had high expectations for the teachers, staff and school he attended. Nothing fell short from teachers, counselors and admin. I have no doubt he received the BEST education there. They went above and beyond to assist students and help them grow. Mrs Ishida (3rd grade) would be in her classroom until well after 4:30 PM allowing the students to do work and tutor in her room. Parents were always kept abreast of what was going on and the progress of the children. The work was rigorous, but helped him grow. He accomplished so much and feels so much pride in his school and himself. I am very grateful that my son was able to experience such a nurturing environment where he was able to thrive. I will truly miss this school.

They focus on character counts which stress trustworthy, respect, responsibility, caring and citizenship...they give awards to students demonstraing these traits and repeat the students creed daily.

Both of my children have been attending Mililani Waena for 3 years now. It is a Fantastic school. I am so pleased with their progress. We are a military family and we were warned that Hawaii had terrible schools, compared to the mainland. That is far from the truth. They have learned so much and have definitely been challenged by their teachers. Every one of their teachers have been caring individuals as well. My son is in the Gifted and Talented program. My daughter has been involved in sports. They have both gotten very involved in school and made many lifelong friends. Both kids were lucky enough to have Mrs. Takara. By far, she has got to be the best teacher I have ever met.

The worst thing about this school is the pod classrooms. A pod is one big room divided into 4 classrooms using furniture and a partial wall. Parts of the pod does not have any windows. This part of the pod can get up to 90 degrees. How do they expect children to learn in the heat? Not only is the heat a problem but you can hear the teacher teaching next door.

Mililani is a fabulous school. I have sent both my sons there and both have ADD/ADHD. They were not outcasted and blended well in the regular classroom due to awesome teachers and the schools daily communication record. Awesome school! A+++++

After moving to Mililani in the middle of the school year, we were greated by a very warm and welcoming office staff. My son has learned far more then I expected in Kindergarten. Not only did he exceed in general studies, but he has been learning so much about the Hawaiian culture as well as the many diverse cultures represented at our schools. MWES has created a wonderful learning environment that is evident in the staff as well as the students that attend.
