Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My years in Leilehua were good ones. Teachers are great, bullying is almost none existent (I have not witnessed any), strong sense of community, many extracurricular activities (outside of school as well), and great athletic department. My complaints: their is not a diverse range of classes, science department is lacking (learned little during 10th and 11th grade), and school class locations is unorganized eg: english class in science wing (this has been continuing to improve over the years however). Highlights: Again, great teachers who really care about us students, strong math, history, language arts, and everything else departments; the student in student athlete is emphasized (many opportunities to catch up on work such as SMARTS nights, tutoring, etc so no excuses fellow students!), opportunities in discovering many different cultures; and last but not least, EXCELLENT avid teachers who push you to do your best and to make the effort to get into college, earn scholarships, and making a better out of students in general -KH

Great staff and students. Large population of military students which makes for a decent transition if you are a military family. Student population is diverse (probably due to military population). The academic curriculum for Honors, AP, and/or GT isn't very broad compared to the offerings at nearby Mililani High School but the class sizes are smaller at Leilehua. The athletic department is excellent and stresses academics along with providing study halls, tutoring and frequent grade checks to ensure athletes maintain acceptable grades while participating in sports. The counselors work well to ensure your student is enrolled in the proper classes. Parents are kept abreast of events via email or telephonic messages from the school and grades can be checked through the Edline system. We heard horror stories about Hawaii public schools before arriving here and continue to hear negative things. Our experience has been great thus far and our son scores very high (90+ %) on the Hawaii assessment tests. We had him enrolled in a private school but placed him in public school because the private school was not worth the $10,000 and offered the exact curriculum as the public school.

Leilehua has been great. My son graduated in 2008 and my daughter is a Junior now. We are a military family and LHS has numerous programs for the kids. Every school is what the parents and students make of it. My son has excelled due to the wonderful staff at LHS and my daughter is on her way to making her own positive mark. Go Mules!

This school is the worst school we have ever encountered! From the lack of control in the classrooms by the teachers, to the poor administration in regards to handling any issues. After 2 months of absolute hell for my son we removed him from this school and put him into hawaii tech academy. Beware of this school.

As a military family, we arrived to HI for our son s 10th grade year. It took some effort, but once we got through placement tests and a few conferences, he was put in honors/GT classes and AP if available. The teaching is good but not exceptional. Academically, Leilehua pales in comparison to Mililani. There are fewer academic opportunities (fewer AP classes, no teachers participate in science fair or National History Day, science or math field trips, etc.) H.S.A. test scores support this academic assessment of the school academics. Extracurricular activities and focus on community are strong. The school has a friendly, welcoming, accepting climate. Our son graduates this year and overall we are happy with the Leilehua experience.

Leilehua's faculty supports the students in every way possible. We offer the students a place to do their homework with tutors twice a week from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. And, from 2:20pm to 4:30pm every day. A place where there are no distractions. There are many after school activities to choose from...Athletics, Drama Club, Hiking Club, Band, Choir, Leadership skills, etc. We have 5 'in school' academies; Construction, Agriculture, Culinary, Graphics and Cinema Tech. On campus, we have a lot of support systems,(naming a few) Peer Mediation, ASACS (Adolescent Substance Abuse Counseling Service), College and Career Counselors, Parent Community Networking Center Facilitator, Transition Center, etc. Leilehua High School is a school that teaches Leadership, Humility, and Service.

Being in the military, our four children experienced many different high schools. My youngest attended Leilehua, and I can honestly say that this was by far the best high school we have ever dealt with. The staff is very involved from academics through athletics, and they expect the kids to be respectable, and to give their all. Hawaii is the most amazing experience for a military family, but to be able to enjoy the cultural diversity, and amazing ohana (family) connections through this school just makes the assignment that much better. The school supports the military 100% and when the 25th is deployed they hang the 'mother's flag' in their school. Basically this means - one of their family members are deployed. Attending this school is an incredible academic and cultural experience for our military kids.

Leilehua is a community as well as a school. There is so much pride in the school by the students, staff and the whole town. My daughter is in the GT classes and is challenged an excelling. Their athletic program is amazing. they worry about the whole student, not just the athlete. Go Mules

My son attends one of the schools that receives the high ranking test scores. However, he did not excel in high school. When he attended this school, the fact that teachers cared and tried to give him individualized attention helped him excel! It isn't about test scores. It is about people and individuals who will choose different career paths. Success is about teachers who care about their students. The student who struggles with a caring teacher will be successful. The student who is advanced and proficient in his/her test scores did not get there without the support of a caring adult.

The school ranks among one of the lowest in scores in the state, however, my son loved the teachers. The school needs more funding and a better system.

My daughter began 9th grade here in 2003,and she is about to graduate this summer. She currently holds a 3.75 GPA, and has so far been accepted to 7 of her choice colleges. Many people tried to dissuade us from sending her to Leilehua, but because she wanted to participate in Army ROTC, we opted to let her attend. It was one of the best choices as parents that we've ever made! Any school is only as good as the parents supplementing at home. Leilehua has provided so many excellent opportunities- my daughter is fully prepared to head to college, and out into the world.

As a parent, I usually don't buy into things very easily but after sending my son to Leilehua I was an easy sale. My son participated with the Baseball Team there at Leilehua and we loved how the Coaches went beyond their duties to take care of our son. They stress 'Ohana' and that's how it was in the school as well. They tought my son how to be responsible, mature, and to be a part of a team. Very important qualities that are needed to live a good life by. I have no regrets about sending my son there and I look forward to my youngest attending there as well next year. As my youngest one says, 'Exit 8 Represent!'

We are a military family and two of my four children have gone through their four years of high school at Leilehua. After hearing negative things about 'Hawaii' schools in general, we were apprehensive at first. But I will tell you that Leilehua has an excellent faculty and staff---starting at the principal! They've truly taken an interest in my children and they have done great there. There are lots of opportunities for students to excel and be involved in lots of extra-curricular activities. It is what you make it---and Leilehua has lots to offer. I have read other reviews that say that Hawaii schools are 'racist'. My kids' best friends are of so many different races---they never experienced any of the so-called racism here. In fact, they've had that much more of a diverse educational and cultural experience because of the differences!

Leilehua truly is a quality high school. My 2 sons attend Leilehua and their experience has been very positive. Excellent cutting-edge programs and teachers, but especially an outstanding principal. Mr. Minehira has high expectations for all students, is well-respected by the student body, and at the same time is easily approachable by students and faculty alike.

One of the best public schools in the state. The military and local community both contribute to the wonderful education and atmosphere you get at this school. Whether you be a highly gifted child or just average, you have enough courses and option to interest and challenge you. It really is a good school, don't be afraid to send you kid here.

My son transfered from another school to Leilehua, and left all his friends behind in the middle of his freshman year. I had the first day jitters, but when I asked him, 'So how do you like your new school,' he answered, 'The people here are really nice.' From that day on, he always talks about doing things 'The Leilehua Way,' which I have learned is a saying of the principal Mr. Minehira. 'The Leilehua Way' is doing the right things with pride all the time.

I graduated from this school and my daughter currently attends here as a senior. It was by far my favorite high school I attended (out of 3) and her favorite as well (also out of 3). The staff is excellent and there are lots of activities to be involved in. It is a great experience. The swim team rocks.
