My daughter is a Kindergartner at Wheeler. We are a military family and they are excellent at supporting that. My daughter's teacher MRs. Williams is everything I would come to expect out of a K teacher. She sends home a daily planner, putting special notes and upcoming events in the class and school. She is very supportive of my daughter, and encouraging to her students. She also works to build a good relationship with the parents. She corrects school work very fast, and is good at letting you know what your child may need to work on. They will have had two field trips before October to help them learn out of the class. The school has Quarterly assemblies where they recognize the students who have gone above and beyond. Also, to teach the kids the importance of group responsibility and teamwork, they have started a Grade class to class attendance competition, all complete with a trophy! They also promote parent involvement with the kids and with the school. The office staff are helpful and friendly. I drive my daughter to and from school everyday, so I cannot say about the bus situation. I don't think that I would ever do it if I could avoid it. That is my only real criticism.

The teachers vary in their effectiveness. My daughter had a fantastic teacher for k, but then I assisted in other rooms that the teacher did a lot of comparing and putting down students. There was a lot of hw for kindergarten but varied for other grades. The #1 complaint were when parents received report cards there was very little prior communication and many parents were in shock! Even if they did speak directly to the teacher each week. Furthermore, there is a lot of bullying (of course will vary). There is strong emphasis on Hawaiian culture but very little on American revolution/American history. The outdoor celebrations involved the students sitting in direct sun for a VERY long time (beware fair skinned kids!) Agree the office staff can be very rude and prejudiced. The principal Lee was not seen often, except at ceremonies. Several students, and my own, were behind when returning to the "mainland" schools in writing abilities and math. If you want to see how the monitor/embrace the children sit in the cafeteria for lunch. Disgusting practices, unruly/lack of discipline. The only students I have ever seen more unruly were the Wheeler Middle School kids -Parent from K-4

i put a geographic exception request for my child to attend Wheeler and i believe that was the best decision i made in my childs acedemic life. my child is in kindergarten. i chose this school because i wanted my child to have a strong foundation and a good start in her schooling. i am very pleased with my childs teacher and don't think i could have asked for a better teacher for her. i highly recommend this school and definately have no regrets in sending her to wheeler elementary.

We have been very pleased with Wheeler Elementary. My son's teachers are top notch and the entire staff seems to have the "Aloha" spirit. Despite what I heard about public schools in HI, my son is learning as much or more than mainland schools. We are so happy we chose Wheeler!

I love this school. Their speech department is excellent. My daughter was in kindergarten this past year and had a great experience. Wonderful, caring teachers and I am very impressed by the education she received. Very happy that we will be here for 3 more years.

My child will be attending the school systems in HI when we PCS there in Dec, my question is, why aren't any of these schools ran by DoD? This school and it's ratings seem wonderful, Is it easy to get into? What will I need to do? Thank You in advance! Just a Mom in seach of a great education for her child..

I was immediately welcomed with open arms when I arrived at Wheeler, which was such a relief since prior to moving to Hawaii, I homeschooled my son due to his behavioral and mental health needs. The teachers and staff were wonderful. The special education department was amazing; they did everything they could to help my child. From the principal to the office staff, everyone worked together for the benefit of the children. It is truly a one-of-a-kind school!

Teachers that really care and get involved are what you'll find at Wheeler. They make every second count especially with the shortened weeks due to Furlough Fridays. Safe campus which is kept very clean. The agriculture program that is made available to the children is fantastic!

This school is awful. They do not communicate with the parents at all. They run the school like it is an elementary school.

I have 3 boys that have attended this school for the last 3 years. Every Teacher has been great. They hold high standards while caring for each kid individually.

My 5th grader came here in October of her 3rd grade year. I also have a daughter in Kindergarten. I was very nervous about the school. Before coming here you hear the worst things about the education in Hawaii. I can tell you that Wheeler has an amazing staff. My daughters are comfortable there and both are doing well with their education and the social skills they are learning. The teachers are always willing to give the extra time and attention. I feel that the parents that have complaints are usually the ones that do not take the time to actually realize what is going on with their kids. I have never had any issue that has not been immediately resolved by a staff member. Their education, safety, and comfort is ALWAYS first with each person at Wheeler. We will all be sad when they have to leave this great school!

My daughter is in 1st grade there, this school has done great things to help us with her. I loved her teacher last year, and I'm still getting to know her teacher this year, but I can say that I think this school is great! They go above and beyond when trying to make sure your child gets the best education that is needed, my daughter has learned so much in the short period of time she has been there and I couldn't ask for more!

I have mixed feelings about this school. I am very happy with the teachers my children have received, however feel that the curriculum is poor. My 5th grader does not write in cursive at all. The grading system is hard to follow and teachers notify too late that children are not doing well. I worked at the school to keep a close eye on the situations going on. This is a decent school for this Island. The principle is hardly ever around however the vice principal is very involved and will not let anything slide. Good job to the vice principal!

my daughter has been very lucky and has had two of the most amazing teachers ever, however there are other teachers that i think are doing a poor job. its really just the luck of the draw.

My children have attended Wheeler for the past 3 years and we have been disappointed with many things. First of all, every time I have given ideas of things they could improve on, the administration usually agrees with me but doesn't implement the idea. Also, I have complained about a couple of teachers who yell at the kids in their classroom on a consistent basis but nothing has been done to stop them from doing it. I feel that the academics is mostly for the below average child and the above average children are not being challenged. Most importantly, parents have offered to volunteer in the classroom but most of the teachers do not want them in the classroom. Overall, I feel that the faculty doesn't understand families in the military and it should be made into a DODD's school, with only military children allowed to attend.

My daughter has attended Wheeler Elementary for 3 years now and despite hearing not so great things about Hawaii Schools I was pleasently suprised! I have loved each and every one of my daughter's teachers. They have each been wonderful, loving and attentive to all of her needs. The school has been wonderfully supportive of the military community especially families like mine who have spouses in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are after school tutoring programs currently available, and unlike other local elementary schools, Wheeler has programs like PE, Music, etc as well as intramural sport programs like Flag Football and Basketball. The principal and vice principal are fabulous as well as the support staff! As for the downsides, unfortunately class sizes are large, there could be better access to computers and technology in my opinion and parent involvment is dismal! I would give Wheeler Elementary an overal grade of B+!

Wheeler Elem is located on a military base. This school is very diverse with different cultures. I still do not understand the state of Hawaii BOE. As a military based public school, Wheeler Elem has unique problems due to recent deployments. It sad that this state continues to shut their eyes and ears to this schools or other military base public school needs. Be that as it may, the school curriculum is focused on the needs of every student reaching his/her potential. This school is quick to indentify students with special needs and to provide services in a timely basis. The campus staff is friendly and accomodating. More parent participation is needed.
