My child attended 4th grade at Waianae Elementary during the 2010-2011 school year. I am not satisfied with the overall curriculum of this school. The focus is heavily centered on Math/Reading and geared towards the students passing Hawaii State Assessment (HSA) tests throughout the year. When I questioned the teacher about Science and Geography noticing that my child only came home with Math/Reading homework, i was directed to the principal. I did not get a face to face meeting with the principal but a phone conversation with the assistant principal who overall referred me right back to the teacher. The ultimate answer is that Science gets lumped in with reading but it not normally taught. I had to supplement my child's learning at home, after school. This school has a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) or group, however, new parent involvement was not readily attainable. The classroom did have air conditioning which is a plus given Oahu is very hot and a computer. The teacher was very young but approachable and enthusiastic. The teacher seemed very much concerned about the direction of the school and also commented about the front office not being so friendly or helpful.
