How do you feel about a 14 yr. old getting 'M-rated' video games?

My son wants a WWII video game. He has the first version which was rated T. The new one out is rated M and I'm not happy. He claims it's "just for more violence", but I'm not so sure...the soldiers swear during the playing of the game. My son is a mature 14 year old. I tend to be a follower of rules; if it says rated for not under 17, then I usually wouldn't even consider getting it for him. My husband doesn't agree. He says I have to let him grow up sometime. Does anyone know about the World At War games?

carvel is right I had forgotten about lock downs as I live about two hours away from VA. Tech and some of the kids around here go there and as my last one goes to APP-State and there has been two there already. All the schools here have procedures in place. Again just one more thing on these young adults. Last year HS student called in a bomb threat. Young adults are resilient but it gets to the best of them. I wish students could enjoy being young (I am sure a lot do) but it seems they just grow up to quickly and that is sad17641

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the "M" stand for mature? Well at age 14 I know that I wasn't mature. No 14 year old is. Some are more "mature" in ways than others but their are alot of stages & changes in life before one actually becomes mature. Some of the video games today are down right disgusting! Showing kids how to commit crimes. These games, along with war games should be banned! There is enough real violence in the world as it is.17640

I think it really depends on the game. My son is 14 and is allowed to have the M rated games that are WWII related. The rating in those is because they are more realistic and there is some language (but the language aspect doesn't really bother me). He and his father (a real WWII history nut) often play these games together and the violence in them is in an historical context and appropriate to the context. I do not let him have any of the games that are gang related or where the killing is done just for the sake of killing or any of the ones that are sexual in nature. It's the same for R rated movies.17638

I dont recall any name calling only responses to the question asked. I believe if you feel its ok for your child to play these games, then opinions shouldn't matter. If you feel it is inappropriate then dont purchase these games for your children. I believe all households are different as to what they allow for their children and what they don't. There will always be different views on topics of this matter. I thought that was what this website was about.17637

I have a 12 year old who is very mature for his age. We allow him to play some of the "M" rated games. He does not repeat any bad language etc. He for the most part follows the rules at home and school - he is a good kid. I do not think he is being hurt by the violence. If I thought at all that he could not handle it, we never would have let him get those games. We do limit his game time though - and only after homework is done to about an hour a day.

I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinions and families have the right to teach/and raise their children the way they see fit. As long as there is no abuse/neglect or breaking of any laws, it should not be of anyone's concern. I think this web site is intended as parents to come together as a community, to have a place where common problems affect many, a place to find advise, opinions or other information that someone may seeking. I find it pathetic that some people really get nasty if you do not agree with them. We are not here to criticize anyone. This is not specifically for a particular person. Those people know who they are. Joining a community means just that. Have you ever been part of a community? I mean really part of something" You would be amazed at what being caring, helpful, thoughtful of others does for your soul. I hope all of the people with so much negativity find some good karma to replace the bad. May you all have a safe, healthy, and positive new year in 2009.17635

It depends how you have raised your son. Does he know right from wrong? Have you taught him to think for himself? Does he parrot everything he sees on TV or does he know where to draw the line between entertainment and reality?
I wont allow the GTA games on a console system in my house (my husband has them for PC) because I don't want my five and three year old watching that kind of game play. However a fourteen year old should be pretty well raised in the morals and ethics department. If it were me I would allow the game, but make it clear that the game would be destroyed if it proved to have a negative effect on him.17634
