I have my students on a restricted student status. They know I'm ALWAYS there for them--academic or just to listen. We form a bond that helps in the classroom. It is NEVER inappropriate. They know I care about them, and they trust me more as a person

NO! Very much inappropriate activity. I know some teachers are very young, and really many of them see it as okay, but it is seriously not.

The teacher should instead of "friending " the students create a special "group" that is inclusive to students and the parents which can help in posting special events, etc. you don't "friend" your students.
