I am a university teacher from China and will be a visitig scholar in University of Florida (Gainesville) this August. I am gonna take my daughter with me, so I am wondering which high school is good for her, who'll be a twelfth grader and will directly apply for an American university after graduation. Any advice or recommendation you can offer? Thx a lot. ---Fenny
Hi Fennyxiao, and welcome to GreatSchools. If you already know where you will be living, that will be a good start. If not, talking to the human resources department at the university could provide valuable leads. Ask to speak to other professors and staff and find out where they live. Find out what schools their kids go to and what they like and do not like about the neighborhoods. You can find out about viable commute times and rule out neighborhoods too far and lacking the amenities (shopping, parks, libraries) that you need.
In the meantime, visit http://www.greatschools.org/find-schools/ and start to narrow down the search. Most public schools require that you live in the neighborhood in order to attend, Some do offer 'open enrollment' or some type of choice, but with your moving in August, you'll miss those deadlines.
Narrow down your search and reach out to the schools now to see when you can tour, and if there are parents you can correspond with until you arrive.
