Excellent administration cultivates an atmosphere of learning. Wonderful teachers reinforce this and help students to excel. A great deal of effort is put forth to involve the parents. Community involvement is high, communication and coordination of events is like a well oiled machine.
The area is growing and the school is experiencing some overcrowding, but despite this, the education of my student remains superior; though I wonder what the future holds. Iona elementary already does far more with less than most can even hope to achieve. As budgets shrink and the number of students continues to swell, the breaking point is rapidly approaching. They're breaking ground on new home developments, but doing nothing about new school developments. Iona elementary is already overcrowded, and with 100+ new homes being built in the next few years, with no other elementary schools around, that overcrowding is only going to get worse.
Another elementary is desperately needed. The boundaries need to be redrawn. But the school district is unresponsive and apathetic.
There is a tidal wave of students coming. Iona elementary has been able to handle the overflow up to now, but it won't be able to handle the amount of students that are coming.
If you're a Mormon, perhaps this will help you understand what I mean: in the past 3 years we have created 3 new Stakes in our area. An entire Stake, every year. We're bursting at the seams. The area is expanding rapidly.
And yet the school district remains unresponsive. Granted, their budget gets smaller and smaller as their number of students quadruples, so it's not like there's a whole lot they could do, even if they wanted to… currently, there isn't a school in the district that doesn't have a playground or front lawn full of portable classrooms.
If you're reading this, because you're considering moving to the area, unless you're planning on homeschooling your children, or sending them to a private school, you may want to reconsider. Not even the LDS church has been able to keep up with the explosion of population. Every ward is overflow full. Every meeting house is beyond capacity. Every Stake center is used by multiple Stakes; our two newest Stakes don't even have Stake centers to meet in, everything is full beyond capacity.
Iona is a great community, but we're drowning in an explosion of population growth.
I love this school! The teachers have worked well with both my kids. They always give me feed back with any questions/concerns. The Principal is great (Mr. Bird) When I go into the school, he will be walking down the hall interacting with the children.
