STM is a safe school, it's doubtful anyone will get shot or stabbed in the hallway. However, what started out 10 years ago as a college prep, higher grading scale, challenging school, has crumbled into a smoldering mess. They have become inflexible in every sense of the word and in every matter, the once excellent staff is leaving at an alarming rate, the internal politics are clouding the actual learning process, the leadership is limp and ineffective, and the board is ill-informed and elitist. A great opportunity for a Christian school to challenge young adults both academically and spiritually has been missed here, as the enrollment falls off not only in new students, but dissatisfied and angry parents pull existing students to enroll them in public schools. It is shame and a waste. If you are considering STM, PLEASE try to contact parents of current/past/withdrawn students before making your decision.
STM is a challenging school academically. The quality of teachers fluctuates but gets better each year. There are some really excellent teachers and a few not so great each year but they tend to get weeded out pretty quickly. The math program is improving as it needed to. The english department is excellent. Your child will be very well read. The foreign language teachers are very good (Spanish and Latin is offered). Science department continues to improve. Sports are very strong and the art, music and drama departments are becoming very good. The grading scale is difficult but student/teacher ratio is very good. Parent involvement is excellent. The school is a very safe environment conducive to learning without distractions sometimes seen in public schools. Theology and service hours are very important. Not all kids fit in but that's the same at any school.
Great learning environment. Teacher to student ratio is exceptional. The administration has solid leadership. Athletics are improving each year. Excellent facilities.
