Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My sons love Alcott. The teachers are fabulous and the parent association is very active.

Our daughter loves kindergarten at Alcott, loves her teacher, and has learned an astounding amount this year. She is reading and writing. I also don't know what I would have done without the extensive after school care options and enrichment classes. While I finish up my day at work, she spends her time after school hours in reading classes, yoga, chess, robotics and performance.

My child has been at Alcott for 4 years and we are incredibly lucky to have found this amazing community! The school is one of only a handful of PK-12 CPS schools and has recently unveiled a 5-year strategic plan to ensure growth for all students and move the school from great to greatest. The new administration is truly terrific - the principal is professional, engaged, pragmatic, decisive, focused on data-driven instruction, and very open to parent involvement. We have a very active, welcoming community that encourages volunteerism and demonstrates to our students what can be done when an engaged parent base works closely with a focused administration to make a CPS school the best that it can be.

We have been at Alcott for 10 years...so far! It's the greatest. The teachers really care about the students, and the fact that the kids get art, music and drama as part of the curriculum is just wonderful.

My fifth grader started attending Alcott in Kindergarten and we have loved the school ever since. The staff, including the teachers and principle are outstanding. I couldn't find any school with a more committed team of educators. Our test scores have improved every year since we have been there, but more importantly, the children are learning how to become life-long learners. The parental involvement is phenomenal and together, every element is what makes this school first-rate.

Parents and community are extremely involved. They help raise school funds under a fabulous principal who is willing to work with the families and within the public school system to do what is best for the children.

Alcott has a wonderful parent base that is extremely active and involved. My child has attended Alcott for three years and has had a really great experience so far. The principal is active in all of the school activities and is responsive to parents even given the constraints of the Chicago Public Schools Board. We're really excited to have the Organic School Project retun this fall and truly appreciate the superior level arts and music programs that our children are priveleged to participate in.

I have been in Alcott for 9 years and I know this school like the back of my hand. I personally think Alcott is the best school in Chicago. My 7th grade math teacher is the best math teacher I've ever had. I've really learned a lot from her. I have excelled grealty at Alcott and i think it is a wonderful school. It's nice to see new kids come too.

I give Alcott School an 'A' for subjects taught, however, I give the math program a big fat 'D'. It's a fun school with lot's of activities, however, their 2nd grade math program needs rehauling. They need to go back to the tried and true math worksheets and limit the math games/manipulatives.

My daughter has been at Alcott since pre-K, she's now in 2nd grade. No school is perfect, but Alcott has provided us with the overall nurturing (academic as well as emotional) that we hoped for. Parent involvement is incredible and encouraged, Chinese language instruction has been a lot of fun as well as challenging. Each year has been positive in general, we can't love all teaching styles but we can love our teachers and school - Alcott is delivering on the most important levels. My daughter is happy and challenged, and when teachers and parents communicate at Alcott, really great things happen. Alcott teachers communicate with parents as our school is a very open environment. My daughter really likes her school, what else can I say? Well... the parent efforts are really fantastic, we work hard to raise needed funds to benefit the entire Alcott student body and will continue .

We are currently entering our second year at Alcott and our family just can't get enough of it! Our three daughters were in private school until last year when our eldest daughter was accepted to on of the city's top elementry schools. They did not have room for our two youngest but we were given a recommendation to Alcott. The result? We like Alcott better! The teachers are committed, the students are constantly challenged, and the parents aim high. This is a case where 'no child is left behind' due to the parental involvement in conjuction to the awesome staff! This school offers more than what we paid for in the past. The extracurricular activities are actuallu character enhancers instead of busy work. We truely believe God blessed us through Alcott!

We have been at Alcott for five years now and could not be more happy. We left a wonderful private school after having been convinced that the challenging curriculum at Alcott better suits our children. The class sizes are small and the teachers are talented, enthusiastic and inovative. The ISATs remain a necessary evil to the teachers and principal alike but they work hard to craft an educational program that is not simply 'teaching to the test'. My children have had more hands-on and experiential learning, particularly in science and the arts, than we ever would have expected at their grade levels. A downside is the influx of high-maintenance parents, as this school seems to gentrify a bit more each year. Having said that, we'll still never leave.

I love this school but I'm disappointed with some of teachers this school year (2005/06). There really is so much energy going on in school, with all kinds of projects. And parents and students are involved in work for our school and they enjoy every bit of their work a lot. But thinking about teaching-learning pattern this year I m more than upset. Really low grades for 1st & 2nd quarter changed to great grades in 3rd quarter (the time of getting ready for ISAT tests) and back to low grades in 4th quarter. And total lock of communication between teacher and parents if I did not go to school to check how my kids are doing I would not know anything until report card pick-up. Year 2004/05 was different my kids worked all year long really hard and were rewarded for their work.

Our son is currently attending Alcott and we really like it. There is so much energy going on in the school, with projects, parent support and they are also working on going organic. We think it is a gem of a school.

I am a student observer and college student in the 2nd grade at Alcott and I am continuously impressed on what the children learn on a daily basis. The seven and eight year olds in Ms. Simmons' classroom are wonderfully politically aware and independent, and even have an educated opinion on who they believe should be our president. The resource teacher is patient and amazing. I would love to teach at this school once I graduate college; both the students and the administrators are wonderful!

My son just entered 7th grade and has been a student since KG. I highly recommend Alcott to anyone looking for a terrific public school. Our principal, Mr. Domovic, came on board 4 years ago and really helped to build upon the strenghts of our teaching staff and involved parents. While Alcott was doing ok previously, he provided the motivation to jumpstart a huge growth and improvement in our academic program. He really listens to the teachers and parents and is always willing to try a good idea to improve our school. His door is always open, even to students! He, along with the teachers, respect and support the students while proving appropriate guidance and discipline. I feel like I am part of a big family where everyone has an opportunity to achive and suceed. I love the creativity and innovation the teachers show in the classroom. The stats don't reflect everything.

Our kids have now been going to Alcott for three years (two in the preschool program and finished kindergarten). We have only positive things to say about the teachers and administration. If considering, you must spend some time talking to them to understand the great things going on here.

Alcott is a diamond in the rough, but definitely moving in the right direction. Through the leadership of a kind, approachable principal who encourages parental involvement on any level (at home or in the classrooms) and the involvement of a great many parents, Alcott is turning around. Many parents have come together to volunteer in any way they're needed, raise funds, etc. The children are very happy at Alcott, and challenged appropriately. There are also some great efforts to integrate fine arts into the curriculum, as well as some extra-curricular activities such as ballet and tap dancing lessons. The statistics about the school don't accurately reflect what's happening at Alcott. It's a good little school.
