Henson is the model community school. 3 classrooms were renovated to create a clinic space, housed by Erie Clinic, providing health screenings, counseling, and connecting parents, children and local residents with clinical and social support services. Staff is on hand to navigate people through the public services. They have had a community garden for 15 years, growing fresh produce. They have a library with 16 computers. They have a separate technology lab, science lab, a space to use for detention and another space for in-house suspension, rather than turning children loose on the streets to get into more trouble. They have organized sports, after school programs with youth-led activities, a mentoring program, and partnerships with early childhood networks. They have pullout rooms to work with children who have reading challenges and demonstrate progress. Technology is integrated into every subject area. The school has corporate partnerships with BMO-Harris and Deloitte & Touche, who remain actively engaged with the school. The Chicago Food Depository drops off food every 2 wks for needy parents. The building, furnishings and equipment are in good condition and relatively modern.
