We transferred our children into Newberry from another public school and they could not be happier. They love the teachers, the scheduling (they say the day "flies by"), and the challenges that they are now being presented with academically. The teachers are top-notch and the enthusiasm and love for the subject each teaches is definitely shown with the students. We are happy we came to Newberry.

I love this school from its students to its faculty and staff. I wish more parents were involved as I feel that would improve the sense of community. In the 4 years that we have been with the school I have seen my children grow and learn and have very positive experiences. I am not sure what some of the other parents below are expecting from their grade school or even if they remember their own past experience for reference. The experience is what you put into it and the most important is what your child is getting out of the school. I am very involved and I care about all of the students. Regarding the fundraising comment, it is by no means a requirement and the expectation is for parents/families can donate in whatever means they feel comfortable. We live in different times where budgets are constantly being cut and I do not believe that ALL of OUR students should have to go without. It is through the generosity of our Newberry Community that we will have a brand new library next year. Let's celebrate how fortunate our Newberry students are and not drag the community down with negative commentary. If you don't like it do something about it.

This is a great school with a caring, approachable and intelligent school principal. The negative comments about her have me baffled. I met with her recently to discuss some concerns that I had about my children. She responded to my request immediately and was very responsive to my concerns. I was blown away with how much she actually knew about my children on a very personal level! The teachers are approachable and seem to work very hard to help the students to learn. I couldn't be happier with this school and am thrilled to be sending my youngest to kindergarten in September!

The school has a great reputation only because of where it is located. By far not impressed anymore. They should not have changed the prior principal. The new principal was the asst. principal and by far has no people skills and seems like she's just there to collect a paycheck . She seems checked out and should not have been given the Principal role. Sometimes roles as such can give you a power trip and have no positive outcome. Mr. Collins (asst. prinicpal) is great! Overall academically I am extremely disappointed with Newberry. My student is in 8th grade and I can not wait until this is over! They don't challenge the students to their full potentail it's sad how it's their last year and it seems that they are not learning anything this year. The only teacher that seems to care and go the extra step is the Math teacher Mr. Greenburg. I have another child that I did not enroll here and is being challenged to her full potential where she's at now.

This school is not what they say they are they cover up so many things just to keep the status they have, they care if about the fundraiser this is a public school not a school of rich kids. The only only one that seems to care about the students is Mr. Collins.

I think this is a great school. It's small so students get sufficient attention to help them academically. There are some after school activities as well.

Good school, good teachers - Principal is openly catty and a little of her goes a long way, but the Vice principal seems to be keeping it together so far. I expect great things under his leadership.

I am very pleased with this school. My daughter came here from a very good private school. Last year was her first year here and she adjusted very well to fourth grade. This is her second year here and I'm please with her academic progress. The teachers here challenge her to reach higher. Her transition from a private to a public school has been assisted by the undertanding prinicple and staff. The diverse community is well represented here a Newberry. I will continue to support the extra cirirriclium as well as the fundrasiers to help them to pursue thir goals.

My daughter has been here since kindergarten and is currently in the first grade. I think the schools academics are wonderful. The other day she was helping a friend in 2nd grade at another magnet school do homework on subtraction and word problems. She understood and was able to explain her answers. I find that to be OUTSTANDING! While the work my seem to be challenging, I do believe she will on or above level with the rest of the world. She's learning to tell time and count money already and her reading is above average. The science class and lab are wonderful. My daughter has been teaching me about plants that I didn't know existed. Thank you Newberry!

I agree that it is amazing that the campaign to revamp the playground has been successful! Congratulations to the principal and the Friends of Newberry for accomplishing this goal in such a short amount of time!as a parent I hope to see the overall parent involvement increase and be made up of a more diverse group of people. I feel that the current staff and administration values parent support and it would benefit the school to see more parents get on board.

As a parent of a soon to be 1st grader- all I can say is "WOW", Friends of Newberry /PTO has raised over $500,000 to redo the school's playground, parking lot and other beatifications (i.e. lighting, planters). They launched their campaign September 2010 and exceed their goal, and broke ground in July. The new leadership from Principal Foley-Acevedo and Asst. Prin. Collins was amazing. Their constant focus on bringing our school to the next level was nothing less than amazing! Pretty impressed with the school on a whole, but just like every other school- parent involvement needs to improve.

As a parent of a 7th grader, and speaking on behalf of many parents, I feel the upper grade teachers are all wonderful, including the science teacher. This teacher has been particularly supportive and motivating to my child. Considering the lack of discipline by the current administration that has become an issue at all grade levels, these teachers have alot more to deal with, and it is unfortunate that uninformed parents such as the previous review, may not be involved enough with the teacher or school to really understand what is going on.

Great School! Great Educators! My oldest graduated from newberry and my youngest still there. I'm thrilled with the leadership of our new principle Mrs.Acevedo. She has added some new afterschool sports and activities for the children which have been wonderful. Mrs.Acevedo has her own children at Newberry which right there say's alot! She is vested in our school! I have been there for a while and I can see a new life in the teachers and staff! Only one teacher I feel needs to be replaced and that is the 7th & 8th grade science teacher. She is unmodivating/uninspiring.

Newberry is a good school to go to. reading the other comments people say i can dissagree when they say dont send your kids to that school. i am a student at this school. the teaching is very good. it meets the levels. may not be the most AMAZING school ever but its a good school the sport programs are much better. and i do agree that they ask for a bit to much money. every teacher has there way of being. but im a student here i have been here since 2nd grade and i can say that im proud to be a student here. i have seen this school try to better. and they are improving. im very happy that they are trying to make us feel better here at school. overall i love newberry.

Newberry academy is an outstanding school. It is one of the most diverse schools in Chicago - both socioeconomically and racially. It has a great culture of academic achievement, an excellent teaching staff that works collaboratively to challenge students and strong adminstrators setting the direction and vision for the school. The school's test scores reflect this focus on achievement. I am very pleased to have my children attend Newberry.

Newberry Academy is a nurturing environment with a truly committed principal, dedicated teachers, and devoted parents. When a child, parent, or member of the community enters the school, one of your first impressions is the sense of warmth and care which people in this school have for the students they serve. Teachers at Newberry tutor children before and after school, children are involved in clubs and sports galore, and parents have plenty of opportunities to get involved in school events whether they be during the school day or after school hours.

Newberry's web site says that the school's focus is math, science and technology. The technology is one computer cart with 30 computers. This can be checked out by teachers on a first come-first served basis. However, there is no one to teach the kids basic computer skills. Does the social studies teacher teach word processing or social studies. This school has a significant lower income student population. Because the student body is not being exposed to the skills that will allow them to succeed, these kids will only have the skills to qualify them for lower income/non-skilled jobs.

crowded classrooms, some teachers are not accomodating work for students with needs, only accomodate the "usual" parents, that dont need to work, lots of bullying, girls making fun of other girls, no feeling of peace in the school, no free after school programs like art, music, dance...everything is payed, seems like this school is very focused on collecting money and for what of we have to end up paying for everything? parties, meeting, after school, tons of supplies (3 reams of copy paper per 22 students? come on are we supplying the whole school with supplies?) what are all the auctions, collections, "donation" for? why are teachers asking for donations to do their work? this scool is ridiculous!

Pros: Strong academic focus, math & science cirriculum, diverse community, competent staff and administrators, caring atmosphere. Cons: Early school schedule, short school day, lacking arts programming, arts/music programming is tuition based only, increased class sizes over past 4 years, which is a reversal of previous 4 year trend, where classes became smaller, parental involvement isn't widespread ("usual suspects")

Newberry is a rarity in our urban environment. It is a school that strives for academic excellence that also has a very diverse population, economically and ethnically. Getting along with varied people is a lesson that all of us (including our children) need to learn, and Newberry's students live it every day. The school has wonderful teachers who are support their students, and are extremely communicative with the parents. The administration is extremely approachable and will address any concerns raised by anyone within the community. This is a wonderful school!

Newberry is the hidden gem in this bustling city. So wonderfully diverse, it is a wonderful learning community. Parents are devoted, students love coming to school to learn, teachers go above and beyond always. It feels like family. The math & science learning is incredible! Administration has an open-door policy and it's location is great!

This school is horrible! I would definently recommend for parents to not send there child to this school. Three of my children attended this school one graduated in 2004 the other 2006 and the youngest graduated in 2009. I am completely dissapointed in the way this school shows there dedication to students. My first two daughters did a great job in this school but, my last daughter to graduate failed behind in the year of 2003 when she was in 3rd grade and since then she became bad at math up until the following year, and Newberry passed her just so they would meet the standards of Illinois schools. This school should be closed down, teachers and staff are rude especially in the office Ms.Pantoja is a huge budge...she walks around the school entertaining the children like a clown!

I have two kids at Newberry, one 1st grade the other one in 7th, we just have an excellent year, I can say more than yes to this wonderful magnet school. Teachers are always challenging students, my 7th grade son is on the track and field team and had a increndible coach. Thanks everybody for all the support. We are one of the schools with good resources every class count with a smartboard great facilities. We just love to be part of Newberry Math and Science Academy.

I have two children at Newberry and would recommed Newberry to anyone. I loved the reduced class sizes for the lower grades 1-3. All the teachers have been wonderful. In 3rd grade my child was struggling with math and her teach set-up extra help 1/2 before school starterd to get her caught up. The office staff is always very helpful. Newberry has this great talent show everyother year which is so mcuh fun to watch all the kids perform. My only wish was their was more afterschool activities that were not fee based. Parent

Newberry offers a decent education to those who are willing to make the effort. Some of the instructors are absolutely inspired. Some are simply there. My kids attend Newberry and are happy. That means a lot to me. However, as a working mother, their lack of an afterschool program has left me in dire straits at times. Extra-curricular activities (art, music, sports) must be paid for by the parents. I also think that the special projects (history fair, science fair) are challenging but are often internet based research which limits those kids who do not have a computer at home or a parent who can take the time with them to research and edit their work.

I wrote a review in June of 2004 and now, as the parent of a newly graduated Newberry student(!), I wish to reiterate how pleased we have been with Newberry Academy. I feel my son is *extremely* well prepared for his high school experience - both academically and socially. The teachers, support staff, and administrators have been wonderful over the past several years. Further, there have been vast improvements in recent years which include more after-school programs, improvement in teaching staff (upper grades in particular), and a greater outreaching of the social network of the Newberry Community. In particular we love the incredible diversity of Newberry Students - the school represents a near-perfect microcosm of Chicago - which offers our children a wealth of experience in culture and socialization. If you were to ask me if you should send your child to Newberry, I would reply with a resounding yes!

I love Newberry - both of my children have attended since kindergarten. Teachers are wonderful nurturing yet challenging, I feel like a community is formed even with children being bussed in. My only complaint(s) is no afterschool program, no real clubs, no arts or music. I think the administration is supportive but more partnering needs to happen. Nonetheless, my kids look forward to school everyday, have made wonderful friends and love their teachers.

Newberry Academy provides a great learning environement for a very diverse student population. The diversity is one of the school's assets - it allows children to learn skills which will be so importnat in all their years to come. The teachers are genrall phenomenal, are dedicated and hard-working. It has been a wonderful experience for my kids. I would say that the upper grades at Newberry at less 'solid' than the lower grades, but in recent years the adminsitration has been making great strides in improving the upper grades.

Newberry is a wonderful place for all kinds of students to learn and thrive. Just about every teacher is truly outstanding and you can see it in their classrooms and the way the kids respond to them. My daughter is thinking like a scientis, asking 'what do you think willhappen if I do XYZ?' Their math curriculum is hands-on, interactive and challenging. I'd like to see more after school activities and fine arts but because it is a magnet school it draws kids from all over the city and is somewhat limited by bussing schedules. Great place and a gem in chicgao public schools!

Newberry Academy of Math and Science is not the type of school you want to send your child to. I was extremely disappointed with the quality of the school. My child was intimidated by the principal and his staff. The office clerks are rude to the students and to the parents. They went so far as to use profound language in front of students. The school does not offer after school extracurricular activities that are free of charge so that all students have the opportunity to join. Academically, the educators are cold to the students. My child attended the school for several years, during this time we only met one teacher who cared and was willing to help the students. My message is sincere. Do not send your child to this magnet school.

I think Newberry has some great programs, especially for the younger grades. I am impressed with almost all of the primary teachers. It is at the middle and junior high school levels that Newberry falters. The principal and some of the teachers are most definitely at odds, which makes for tensions that sometimes trickle down to the children. Parental involvement can be a bit overwhelming, especially at the PTA level. I have found the members of the PTA to be unfriendly at best and an exclusive social club at worst. The 'attitude' evident from this group with regard to those parents who cannot dedicate the entirety of their time to Newberry is disheartening. I have seen myself some of the members' comments to other parents during open house night or other school events. That said, Newberry is great for Kindergarten through fourth grade. After that, find a good middle school.

I am a current eighth grader at this school and I am very proud of it. This school has given me opportunities that were never there before. I Graduated Newberry last year, (2003-2004 class)I felt that i was protected at Newberry and I got a wonderful education! The teachers are full of love for everyone they encounter. I got the best education possible. The Principal was very outstanding giving everyone of our students a chance to succeed. There is a commitemtent to be made when you enter Newberry and you end up forgetting about it and going for a higher goal. There is very good Equitment, like computers etc. I would tell anyone to go to Newberry Academy for the best education your children can recieve. 04.

Our daughter is in Kindergarten at Newberry and we are very happy with our experience. She loves her teacher and her new friends. The facility is clean and well-maintained, with a gym, library, auditorium, dedicated science classrooms, and a large playground. The PTA is very active and the parent community is friendly. The teachers and staff are all very professional and welcoming to the children. We are amazed at how many teachers and staff members greet our daughter by name in the morning! In addition to all the above, a huge benefit to Newberry is the reduced class size with about 20 children per class from Kindergarten to third grade. Most public schools have around 30 children per class, and it's wonderful that the Newberry teachers can provide extra attention to the students in the early grades.

Newberry has not only provided a stimulating learning environment but also one that nurtures children into caring individuals. The educators are very creative and support children's learning using diverse methods. I have found my experience at Newberry to be more than a parent could wish for. My only (minor gripe) is that all afterschool activities are fee based.
