Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Our kids are doing well here. We have never had a problem with any of the teachers, except the insurmountable amount of homework that comes home. We are also are considered "uninvolved" parents as explained in last post. Since we both work full time we cannot attend 3pm meetings and would have to take off work to help with most of the school functions. We save our days off for when our children are sick and holidays. That last post makes me mad because it is the tone felt at the school, the parents that are involved are better and so are their children. And since we cannot attend meetings we can't even keep up to date on things either because PTO nor the LSC post minutes---which we find inexcusable. School should focus more and reaching out to parents, better communication and treating everyone equally.

Onahan is a great school. There is a real sense of community among parents. I have had issues and the administration worked with me to resolve them. my older kids were very well prepared for HS honors classes and HS athletics after graduating and my younger one loves classes and her teachers. The biggest problem at Onahan is the very few unhappy parents who are completely uninvolved in the school and complain publicly rather than become a part of the solution. The majority of parents that are involved and go to meetings, and know what is happening inside the school are happy. At any school, you need to be involved to get the best out of it for your kids.

I was a student at Onahan, I loved every minute i spent at the school until 7th grade. The teachers were unbelievably dedicated and friendly. The 7th and 8th grade teachers however need some work. There are some good teachers but not nearly as many as there should be. They are lazy, unorganized and not dedicated to giving their students a valuable education. I do not feel like I learned nearly as much as i should have in 7th and 8th grade. I wanted to leave the school satisfied with my education but i was not.

Onahan is a great school! We have dedicated teachers that volunteer their time after school for our school play, basketball, volleyball, football, softball, rocket club, girls on the run, chess club, girl scouts, spring dance, science club, solar car, talent show, homework club, student council etc. We have such dedicated parents that volunteer so much of their free time to run for LSC and PTA and run school programs. Our Principal and LSC fight for our school and anyone that does not see that does not attend LSC meetings. At the parent run silent auction we raised enough money to fully stock our new computer lab, we have ipads on carts the teachers use everyday and now we will have our second computer lab fully stocked in the next month. The PTA "out of uniform days" are raising enough money to buy new state of the art science lab tables. This is a great community school - PTA have numerous volunteer opportunities throughout the year so you can be part of the school. LSC work very hard behind the scenes and they have an open forum at every meeting where we can address any of our concerns.

I was happy with Onahan k-5 but its teachering is much lacking for 6-8. New leadership is much needed. All I have seen this year is lazy uncaring principal and junior high teachers. My kids for the first time hate school so much they not only do what they can to stay home but want to transfer. It's so heartbreaking. Can't wait to get out.

I'd like to start off by saying that no school is perfect. Onahan certainly had its flaws, but it was a second home to me throughout the years. I knew almost everyone there, and almost everyone knew me as well. As a former Onahan student, I thoroughly believe that what you put in is what you get out. It depends entirely on the student and whether or not they are willing to put in the effort required to succeed at this school. The staff may not be great and it may not be the best school, but I felt prepared as I entered high school and never found myself wishing I went somewhere better.

This school needs new leadership/principal/LSC. Very clicky here. School communication needs improvement. Office can sometimes be rude and abrupt with parents. Curriculum is good, but no change from my oldest to my youngest child. Not enough time spent on actual writing skills in 3rd and 4th grade. Something more than extended responses. There's a huge gap from 4th to 5th grade expectations. Kinda goes blah around 7th grade.

I attended Onahan for 4th and 5th grade and unfortunately had to transfer shortly thereafter. I noticed when I enrolled into the next school, I was ahead of my class and my vocabulary was much more vast. This school was very diverse and well rounded.

I was a student at Onahan 51 years ago. My kindergarten teacher was so nice. We took a walk to her house. Yes that was ok back then. I remember the good humor man coming to our playground when we were out on recess we could buy a treat from him if we wanted. Those were the good ole days. No school is perfect we all want the best for our kids. I live in the Jacksonville area in Florida. I home schooled my youngest child. For good reasons. I wanted more control over my sons educational destiny. BTW Onahan still looks the same.

Onahan is a great school because the students and parents care about the school. They try to find ways to improve the school as much as they can. In these hard times and government cut backs, I feel that parents need to step up more and give a little for their children's education. The children at Onahan deserve they best education that we can provide for them.

Onahan is the best. It is an all around community school with great families, teachers and students. They work hard to provide the best to their students from sports, to science and music. I can honestly say it is like my family. When we moved into our home we checked out the schools in the neighborhood and Onahan was a big reason for choosing where we live now.

This is a great teacher parent communication school. You are constantly updated and informed on what is going on with your child. We are blessed with exceptional teachers who not only show our kids how important they are but they live every moment on those school grounds as if our kids are the most important. That I find is rare and can be seen on every childs face when you ask them about there teachers, they love them, maybe not all the time but most of the time if they loved them all the time Id have to wonder ha ha ha. This school is great because it is the home away from home that every child deserves. Face it 10 months out of the year our children spend at school, these teachers have them more during the day then we as parents do. They are as much a mom or dad to our kids in the sense they are correcting them teaching them encourageing them just like we as parents do at home. I couldn't ask for a better home away from home for my kids than Onahan and its amazing staff.

I have had my children in this school since First Grade. The teachers are excellent and they have great sports programs for the 6-8 Grades. Namely Volleyball, Track & Field, Basketball, Flag Football, and Cheer-leading. The principal is good and goes to many of the school events. The school is in great shape and they just got a new outdoor track. They have two playgrounds, one for the younger children and one for the older ones. Everyone is doing a fine job, keep up the good work.

Onahan is the perfect fit for my children. The wonderful staff keeps in touch with the parents. They go out of their way to find ways to teach our kids. The math and science programs are wonderful. My children love doing their homework and putting extra effort into everything they do. Onahan is a great school in the community which holds events throughout the year for both young and old alike. The school really reaches out to the parents to stay involved with their kids on all levels. The principal and her staff always are available for any questions or comments. They take great pride in teaching our children to be America's future.

The most important part of our school is the Teachers and Students. They have done well in our all of the testings. We do not receive a lot of help from the city financially which is unfortunate. We are a forgotten neighborhood. We are not poor enough but we are not rich enough either. We have one of the best Parent Participation in our school and I really believe with all the hard work they do to get the school what they need should be recognized. At this point our Principal barely has enough money to buy school books. And with the economy the way it is, many of the private schools are to expensive and our public school is now busting out of it's seams. The principle needs extra help to buy books and basic needs for the school. Our Parents have vowed to help!!

This school is brillant. After wasting my time at a catholic school I cannot believe how qualified and caring the teachers are at Onahan. They are so approachable and get back to you right away if you have any concerns. They do not tolerate bullying of any kind and because of this the children are so nice to each other. I just love this school. I love the principal Mrs. Koegler - she is such a kind, caring person and the kids love her. You can see how much she cares when she cant even get through her graduation speech with the 8th graders without crying. It amazes me how different all the teachers techniques are and how they make the subjects so interesting and challenging. It really shows they care. Great school - so happy we are here!

I am blown away by how advanced the academics are here at Onahan. Friends who are in the same grades in various Catholics schools in the area have not even begun to cover what my children have already completed. The parents and teachers are very supportive. And, as the previous review stated, just take a look at the test scores and obviously the staff is doing something right. Unfortunately there are parents out there who feel that their children do no wrong and those are the ones who are crying about the school being 'strict'. They are as strict as they should be so that the students are not running the school as I am sure those same children of the complaining parents are running their household.

Onahan is a very good school. The principle is approachable and the staff the is quite involved. There are prior post as to the staff being to strict. I do not believe they are to strict, but are determined to keep the children focused in order to meet the standards for our children to move on to their high school years. Just review the schools test scores and the school/staff are doing the job well. My child received his progress report and the following morning upon our request the teacher contacted me. Very good school.

This is our second year at Onahan and I have to say it is an awesome school! Mrs Koegler is a genuinely caring human being among many of the parents, teachers, etc. Coming from a Catholic school, my kids were behind academically and needed to catch up to what CPS was advanced to. The education by far is MUCH better!!!

I'm a current student at Onahan and school and there's good and bad things to say about Onahan. The bad things are how Onahan is so strict. Also, the Vice Principle is very strict and she's also the computer teacher. We barely go to computers because she's not always there. We need a real computer teacher and she also gets mad or yells at ever little question. Some good things are how nice the teachers are and they can help you if you need it. I enjoy and like Onahan but I don't like coming here for school.

I'm a parent of a mew student to the school this year and it has been a complete desaster for my child. Upon finding out at progress report time in November that my son was failing bad I have as of yet been able to talk with any one of his teachers personally about his situation and progress well other then one who only gave me lip service and said she would get me more info which has never happened. Upon three attemps to get e-mail addresses I have been denied access to the classroom teachers and no litteracy request has been offered by the school either. I hope if you have a choice parents avoid moving into this schools area and if you do pay very close attention from the very first day. It's really troubling to me because the High school this school feeds is the complete opposite. rating-1

As a product of Catholic school I was hesitant to send my children to a Chicago public school. This is our third year at Onahan and I cannot praise the school and it's administration enough. I have never had a second thought about sending my girls to this school except for why I wasted two years of their education at a Catholic school. The current Principal is wonderful and very involved with the parents. If every Chicago public school had a Principal like her, our public school system would not have anything to worry about.

I am very unhappy with Onahan. My son trnasfered there in 6th grade. After going to private schools from pre-k/5th. We were told Onahan was one of the top 10 in Chicago. We were very supportive of sending him there being new in the area. If this is a top 10 school I feel sorry for all Chicago school children and parents. There is little communication with progress on how children are doing. It takes at least 3 to 4 days to get a call back from a teacher. They setup programs and then cancel them without any notice.
