Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I am a student at Southwood middle school and this school needs lots of improvement. If your child doesn't attend Southwood already I suggest they don't. The principle is unnecessarily rude myself a about 5 other student made it to school at 7:50 and school doesn't start until 8:00 and the janitor opened the door for us to let us in but they wouldn't let us through the second door she kept us standing there making us late a parent came into the school to talk to the principle because her son was going to get a detention because this was his second tardy when they made us come into the office the principle called the parent over and she said they were all here on time they shouldn't get tardy slips and the principle said look have them here before 7:52and the mom said they were and the principle said ok and dismissed her in the most disrespectful way and after the parent left the principle continued to say rude thin under her breath and says something like I don't want to hear your story. this schools staff is rude and this school is ver poor.

Just an awful school, I wouldn't recommend any parent to let there child go there. They are very unorganized. Seriously needs helps. If you are moving to the district for Southwood consider going to a private school (like St. John's, possibly?)

Southwood Middle School is changing in a positive direction. The new school administration is a bright light in the dim path of improvement for the school. I applaud the way the administration is trying to implement new things to improve the learning and well-being of all students.

I am a former alumni of Southwood (c/o 1990). I am sad to see these posts. It is disturbing to see students are disrespectful, unfocused, and racist. I am noticing that many of the posts by the students are poorly spelled and lacking punctuation. This speaks to the veracity of the criticism. I am a Math and Science teacher in the city. I might move back to CC Hills and help out. I liked the education I got at Southwood. I found the teachers competent. I would love to see what measures the current administration is taking.

Southwood is a real good school. Before I Went to Southwood, people keep telling me that it was such a bad school and when you get there youre nt goin to learn anything. I now go to Southwood. This is my 3rd year and i dont regret going here. The teachers try their best to get the students at the highest level of academics. Its nt the teachers fault the children are failing, its the children fault because they choose not to learn. Take it from a student who goes to Southwood NOW, Southwood does its best at evrything. I love all the teachers there. Class 2O11-2O12 <3

I posted my review on 9/10/10 but now I'm changing my mine. The school is decent. And is pretty great. The teachers try their best. It;s just the students. If you mind the drama and the cursing in each sentence then this is the school for you. I can't say that their aren't good students but, oh well. The beginning of the school year was great but it sucked toward the end. I'm usually excited for the first day of school but not anymore. It's an eh school. Great staff though especially the Librarian. >,>

Its my first year and this school is a decent school. It has the best lunch and the nicest teacher. If your students are failing thats your fault. They dont turn in their stuff and isnt responsible. The teachers try their best and teach to the students abilities. There might be drama but this school is awsome. I read some of your reviews before I went to the school and I didnt even want to go. But now that I did I'm not regreting. Dont hate and aprreciate the fact that your judging a school base on opinions.

-southwood* overall southwood was a decent school. The teachers are ignorant and pick fights with the children, when doing that of course nobody is going to let them , there fore the arguments arise which they start. Then they blame it on us. well used to because i go to rich central now. but anyways Mr.short is a cool nice caring staff member who i can say actually cares the most about his student at southwood. but <3southwood =] [08-09] qotta love iit !.

I taught at Southwood Middle School and I believe there is a lack of support for the staff members from parents and administration. I also believe that there are many wonderful students that possess great potential for success. However, due to the oversized classroom rosters, lack of support from administration, a non-friendly office environment, disorganized school events, and the overall lack of student accountability from administration leads to the faultering of potential success on all sides of the spectrum. There are so many wonderful teachers at Southwood and I'll miss them all!

In my opinion, Southwood Middle School has qualified teachers that truly want to teach. The problem is that a small pecentage of students do not care enough about learning and do not want to learn. That percentage of students display behavior that comes with no consequences from administration. It is most upsetting, as well as stressful on teachers that want to teach, but is hindered by unruly and disrespectful students. It is obvious that the children are displaying this same type of behavior at home. Education starts at home! Parents, stop blaming the teachers and accept the fact that your child is not being held accountable for their inappropriate behavior.

Southwood is the worst School I've ever had experience with. My child has only attended for 8th grade. The entire staff is lack luster to say the least. I wish I hadn't moved to thia area. My child went from being and A,B student to a C average, and the teachers tell them that C's are ok. The Mayor of CCH is always getting involved in everything else he needs to be dealing with District 160. Parents if you are considering moving to CCH please don't allow your children to go to Southwood. This school will mess them up. This School need to be closed!

Southwood and District 160 is the worst I have ever dealt with. We have administrators that just don't care. They will kick your kids out of school for anything. My daughter was a honors student all her life before I moved to to this district. The principasl run these schools like prisons. Anyone considering moving to Country Club Hills dont unless you can send your children out for their education. The staff blame the parents but its not the parents its the staff and their terrible teachers. The board is horrible they accept this mess staff run wild. If you have special education students, the district has no problem breaking the law and running to their lawyers to get them out of the nasty ditch. All parents run run run!!!!! They will turn your child into failure!!!! This district is sub standard and disgrace to the city of Country Club Hills.

Southwood lacks in many ways. They are not a top notch district so they cant pay for great teachers. So they get the bottom of the barrel. Many good teachers that come leave. Administrators leave as soon as they see how crazy it is. They lack strong leadership across the board. The school board wants a great district but they dont back the superintendent. Many students come from good homes but with homes costing 50,000 to 500,000 you get a wide range of students. Please do not send your child to Southwood!

I enrolled my son into this school in 7th grade at the begining of the 2008-2009 School Year. My son's grades and attitude took an immediate down fall. Before that he had attended the same Catholic school since preschool. He was an A - B student and loved school. After just the first semester I have transferred my son back to the school he was attending. It will be a strain on my family financially and transportation wise because we no longer live in the city but so help me God..I cannot let my child attend this school. I cannot blame it all on the teachers. I believe the students are off the chain as well. I recently moved to cch to a wonderful home and a wonderful community but that school is far from wonderful.

Honestly they need to provide a better curriculum for the kids. The office is very disorganized. But I can say that I had an excellent experience there; an incident took place with my son and I needed to speak with the Principal. He was terrific, the way he spoke to my son and the advice he gave, the wonderful story he told about his journey through school, even left me thinking about pursuing college again. It was truly good for my son that he spoke to him that day. But of course its hard for him to tackle the school problems alone. I can say, Yes, it does start at home but the pressure these kids face today; is so strong that no matter what you have taught them, what they know is true and right. That fourteen year old mind just does what it thinks is right.

I am very happy that my granddaughter is graduating from this school. I feel that the school does not provide a challenging educational curriculun for students, there is very little communication between staff and parents, few extracurricular activities and on the whole the school is very disorganized. I am very dissapointed with the lack of concern shown by the staff.

Thank god my son is graduating this year! The school is honestly that bad. The new principal is trying and so do some of the teachers. However, the students run the school. Our school was recently vandalized.I wish the state would step in and clean this school up already. My Mayor recently said ' He is appalled at the kids behavior' and ' Things need to change at the school.'But where is he to help? All he ever says is it takes a village---- So where is the support?

What does money have to do with children behaving like animals. The real issue here is self respect which is obviously lacking in most of these kids lives. I have news for all of you and that is self respect is learned at the home and not in school. Try it sometime, you just might be surprised.

There are alot of good teachers there, but the caliber of kids that go there are crap. The children's parents didn't teach their kids respect for others or themselves, which is the problem. The parents need to stop blaming the teachers for everything that goes on over there and start taking responsibility for their children's behavior. My two cents.

I went there 2004-2007. Key points about school- * Horrible leadership *No security *Teachers don't know how to work with students *I question if some teachers were even qualified to work *We used to have everything from step team to chess team to drama club. Now all they have is basketball, band, and.... *I faked sick many times, because I didn't want to go to that school; I wasn;t missing anything -_- Unless things have changed in the past year, don't send you children to Southwood!! You have been warned... (P.S. Thank God I only stayed there for 3 years. High School reminded me how much I liked school)

The NCLB policy is the very reason why children who come to school ready to learn, with parents who are involved in their child's education are in fact left behind. This policy should never take place because it in effect disables the children and parents aforementioned and the abilities of the teacher. There is often no backing for dedicated teachers leaving them no option but to attend to the behavior disorders in the classroom. Unfortunately, teachers can't only teach to those who want to be taught because of consistent distractions and disruptions. My advice become a board member or get really close to one if you desire change. They are the ones who make decisions. And let us not forget about legislators who set the tone, who also have no experience teaching.

My child just transferred to Southwood, and I was appalled at the activity that went on in the school. The children run the halls with no guidance. I do understand that the school is understaffed, but something needs to be implemented. To put it bluntly, the school is over-crowded, the teachers cannot teach effectively when they are attending to so many behavior situations, and the children who really want to learn are caught in the madness. Not to mention the cultural change from citizens that have moved in from other areas. This is effecting the other children in a negative way. I am certainly moving my child to another school.

The scool is based on social promotion. Many students fail academically but get promoted. Most teachers are highly capable and dedicated. There is a moderate degree of parent involvement. Parents need to place a greater value on thier childern's education. When parents demand quality performance students deliver.

Extremely poor quality school. Poor quality in every area. My son's private school closed in May of this year, so unfortunately I had to enroll him at Southwood. Fighting is a constant at the school. His locker has been broken into several times. Putting my son in this school has been nothing but a headache. Needless to say we have decided to pull him out and put our home on the market. If anyone is planning a move to this district with school-aged children, unless you can afford private education, my advice is to look else where!

Quality! I don't think the faculty at Southwood know what quality is. There is no structure at all. My son spent an entire year there and I don't feel he learned anything. I believe the student to teacher ratio stated on this site is vastly under the real count. There were at least 24 students in my sons class.

Southwood truly is a horrible school. My son attended Southwood when we moved to CCH and it was the worst experience of his life. He had been in private school all of his educational career, but when we bought our house and moved to CCH that was not a viable option at the time, so we put him at Southwood. What a grave mistake! It was a true culture shock for him. The teachers can not control their classes and the students run the school.

I can't imagine what it would take to turn this disaster of a school around. The faculty doesn't remotely seem to understand the root of behavioral problems stemming from a lack of a truly good education. If you don't know what it takes to insprire....you can't possibly know what it means to teach. The entire school seems to be bogged down in short term thinking with daily fires to put out.....as a result...it will only be a matter of time before the whole thing just get burned financially by the state. I am in the process of trying to get my child out of there.

I feel that the administration at Southwood needs alot of help. They are so focused on behavior issues that they don't spend enough time on teaching. They are already on the 'warning list' in Illinois, and they continue to not focus on teaching our children what needs to be learned for the state tests. I am currently trying to transfer my child to another district. What ever happened to the 'No child left behind' motto? Does that only apply to some kids? I give Southwood two thumbs down!
