My children cannot wait to get back to St. John's school! They love the friends they have there. We have two children a boy and a girl, an introvert and an extrovert. Both are doing well. I found the staff helpful and supportive when dealing with behavioral issues. St. John's is an excellent school for parents who appreciate academic excellence and wish to have their children behave respectfully and appropriately. Excellent religious education along with academics, plus great extra curricular activities for students to get involved in. Great before and after school care offered, too. All at affordable prices.
My daughter just completed first grade at St. John's. She and I are both quite pleased with her experience thus far. Her reading level went from 1.6 to 3.8 in one year. She came home after the first week of school and told me what she learned about Russia, Africa, Germany, and the seven continents. When I tried to find the material in her text books, it wasn't there. I later found out that she learned all of this from a map on the classroom wall. Her first grade teacher used it to teach both geography and history. My daughter has developed a passion for learning that did not exist before she switched to St. John's. This school is an excellent choice for those parents that want their children to learn. We receive weekly progress reports and was always able to meet with the teacher as needed to address any concerns. I think the small class fosters a better learning environment for all students. Pastor Dorn is always looking for ways to improve the school offerings and is very approachable. Parent involvement is not as strong as it could be, but there are efforts in place to improve that. This school is definitely one of the best kept secrets in the Southland.
St. John's is a great institution for learning and growing. I am pleased at the attention my child is able to get due to the small class sizes. Staff/faculty members, students, and parents are close knit. Academically my child is excelling. At first glance at homework and class assignments it seemed challenging and I wasn't sure my child would be able to keep up but teachers have more than prepared her with learning techniques that have contributed to her early success. I am also pleased with the christian training which reinforces what we teach at home. I think St. Johns and parents could do a better job of singing the schools praises and letting others know what the school has to offer.
I have been a member of this congregation for some time. My children all graduated from St John. We strive to serve all of our students to the best of our ability. I feel we have a very caring and capable staff. I wish that some of the parents who wrote negative reviews had first come to the school officials with complaints.
We were not aware of this site until recently. But I would like to respond to some of the comments left a while back. We always feel bad when we cannot serve a student, or when a family leaves us unhappily. To those families I would like to apologize. Fortunately, they are not the majority of the families. I don't even know who left the messages since no name was attached to the message. The staff at St. John's does an excellent job in preparing our students for later life. Our graduates do well in high school and beyond. We are not the most up to date in some areas, but we offer a quality education at an affordable rate. Last year half of our graduates went on to attend Marian High School, and three of them were awarded academic scholarships.
To be a private school they are lacking many of the benefits private school should provide. They charge extra for everything and have a poor way of handling conflicts with parents and students. The demeanor is so dismissive it is sickening. i am not sure if all the teacher there are even certified. i am very disappointed with the school!
This was one of the best educational experiences of my life. My friends stick together, sure theres some conflict, but we can all overlook that. The teachers are well organized and they know what there doing, and they always find some way to put in humor while they are teaching. I had to transfer to Southwood, and I wish I can go back to St. Johns.
The teachers and staff stick together so that no resolution is found during conflict. I don't understand how the principal can sleep at night with all wrong he has done towards the children. Curriculum wise the school is great but only one teacher, (Mrs Stewart) takes the time to get to know her students. St. John's is begging students to enrole because they know they cannot maintain at this pace.
While it is just the beginning of the school year, I am very impressed at the overall structure of the curriculum and the commitment of the principal and staff. We are new to the school and my son is a 1st grader. His teacher has a rigorous program but I have to admit I've seen a drastic change in his desire to be accountable for his assignments and school philanthropic efforts. Additionally, his reading is solid for a 6-year old and he is not afraid to take on more challenging words to read more difficult material.
