This school is absolutely terrible. Delavan C.U.S.D. #703 has left me totally unprepared for life on all fronts. Academically this school is a joke. The books are pre colonial at best. The teachers, obviously not motivated by paycheck, couldn't care less about your education or well being. The administrative staff are paid far more than they should be and are commonly referred to as leeches. In regards to the IT department...words don't quite do justice to their incompetence and general computer illiteracy. The sports program is underfunded and substandard. The coaches know nothing about the activity or sport in which they coach. The programs could be aptly compared to a second rate nanny. All in all this apathy ridden school is, in the simplest term, bad.
This is what a small town school is all about! The classes are small, teachers and administrators know every student and, more importantly, care about every student. They make a concerted effort to serve the needs of each student - across the spectrum of abilities. Student who struggle are given the attention they need; students that excel are provided with opportunities to reach their full potential. While the size of the school does limited the breadth of classes offered (e.g., only Spanish is offered as a foreign language), what is available is top notch. While other schools have nice physical structure and greater resources, I doubt the educational experience can match what is available at Delavan. As parents, we are thrilled with our decision to live in Delavan and have our child attend school here.
It is a great school - caring instruction, small classes, high level of parental involvement. Great senior-level leadership. I believe the Superintendent is absolutely top-notch and has maintained a financially sound foundation. Excellent school board, and there were equally qualified candidates that were not elected. This shows the community support and involvement. The trade-off? Restricted enrichment programs and activities. That is certainly an exchange we are happy to make - providing an excellent core education rather than spreading yourself too thin. Do fewer things really well, not many things poorly.
Wish they had more classes for seniors. Class size is small. Teachers and principle care. Not alot of sports
