Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

We moved our kids to St. Mary's after years in the Downers Grove public school system. We wish we'd have done it sooner. We chose St. Mary s because it had the best student to teacher ratio of any school in the area. Students are put into groups where they are challenged based on their abilities not a one size fits all approach. Also, the technology employed by the school is better than other schools we looked at and significantly better than d58. Moving 2 girls from one school to another was a scary proposition for us as parents and the kids, but we were welcomed with open arms by everyone. After 6 mos, we feel like we've been here for years. The curriculum is much more challenging than the public schools, but that s exactly what we were looking for! My girls are learning critical thinking & encouraged to be independent thinkers. Teachers are exceedingly committed to the success & overall well being of each student. All of this is done in a Christ centered environment where kids are held to high moral & ethical standards and truly respect one another & their teachers. St. Mary of Gostyn develops student's intellectual competencies and they develop strong character too!

In sending my kids to St. Mary's, I have benefited as much as they have! They are receiving an excellent education, evidenced by the principal's desire to continuously be "on top of" what other schools are doing and applying/enhancing to our own. Additionally, so many lessons are taught while using faith based principles, and using Jesus as an example. It may sound corny, but it is heartwarming to hear my kids talk about Jesus and how he is such a good model of love. It also puts a smile on my face, when rushing to sit down and eat dinner, my 1st grader stops me and says, "we need to say Grace." I thank St. Mary's for reminding me how important faith is to me, and my kids. I did not know many others when I moved here, and have since built amazing friendships with so many people. It has such a strong sense of community that has grown stronger in the 8 years I have been a part of SMG!

St. Mary of Gostyn is an outstanding school. We moved here in 2012 from out of state not knowing anything about SMG. The welcome we received upon the tour, along with the genuine follow up from Mary and Diane, made the decision to send our 3 children to the school (soon 4 children). The families welcomed us with open arms and the community support was felt. The leadership at SMG is strong, as is the parent involvement, all working towards making SMG #1 (the preschool is ranked as such). The education is top notch, and I know all my children will be challenged according to their level (math and reading specialist on hand to help ensure your child is at their highest potential). Our family is thrilled to be part of the St. Mary of Gostyn family, and we know our children will receive the best education contributing to their continued success.

St. Mary of Gostyn (SMG) provides an excellent education with Catholic teachings and values. SMG teachers care about their students and encourage open communication with parents. Our school is committed to academic excellence and has resources in place to help children at different academic levels succeed. SMG encourages the use of technology appropriately. Our school has resources to teach technology and encourage our children to embrace the technological world we live in. It's a place you feel good and safe to send your children. SMG is a community and a family committed to helping our children grow socially and academically in Faith. The work, care and effort put into making it great is apparent. We live in a community with great Public Schools, yet the decision to send my children to SMG is an easy one. I know SMG is committed to our children and will reinforce the values we teach at home.

A fantastic institution for learning. My kids started out at a DG public school and decided to transfer to SMG. Best idea ever. The school is filled with dedicated teachers, technology and fantastic sports and extracurricular programs

Great education in a caring community. Preschool teachers are loving and supportive. Full day kindergarten is welcome to us full time working parents! New fourth grade and fifth grade teachers are moving my kids ahead with a teacher specific subject teaching. Can't wait to get into 8th grade with the new technology program.

We have one child enrolled currently at St. Mary of Gostyn, and one who has recently graduated. Our children did not begin their schooling at SMG but were "transplants" from a neighboring school. We are affirmed on a daily basis that we made the right choice when we enrolled our children at SMG. The quality of people in and affiliated with the school is superb. The teachers are terrific and, above all, accessible. The education my children have received is first-rate. The environment is extremely welcoming. The principal is a strong leader and involved. We are blessed to be part of this community.

We are so happy with the education our two children are receiving at St. Mary of Gostyn. My husband and I are both transplants to this area and when it was time to consider a K-8 school for our oldest child we did a lot of research comparing and interviewing many schools in the area. SMG was by far the best choice for our family. Not only is it a welcoming environment for our children but we believe it is very strong academically. In addition to the academics, the staff at St. Mary of Gostyn does an excellent job of reinforcing the christian values that are so important to us. We have been extremely happy with the education our children receive here and are proud to say that our children attend such a wonderful school.

I have 2 children at SMG and could not be more pleased with the Christian environment as well as the solid education my children are receiving. You notice the positive environment as soon as you enter the school and are greeted by either one of the school secretaries. I was very surprised and pleased to learn that SMG has a Reading Specialist on staff. If a child has an issue with reading, they meet with the Reading Specialist as long as necessary until their skills improve. Another thing I love about SMG are the extra-curricular activities that begin in 4th grade. Students can join the Environmental Club, Student Council, & Fine Arts Band. In 5th Grade, students can participate in the Interscholastic Sports Leaguesof Vollyball or Cross Coubtry in the Fall and Basketball in the Spring. There is also the Geography Club, Math Club, Choir and Spring Play. One final note, the parents of the student ast SMG are the best. There are so many volunteeres that gladly make the school an overwhelming success.

We highly recommend St. Mary of Gostyn as and excellent academic and faith enriching school for your children. We have three children enrolled in this school, and we are thrilled that we made this choice for our children despite the sound public schools in the area. We cannot say enough about the community of parents and teachers which foster respect and communication with each other and our children. Our children are thriving both inside and outside the classroom. St. Mary of Gostyn is a special place.

We have three children at SMG, and love the school for many reasons, but the most important to our family is the support and care our children receive. One of our sons was slower to pick up reading and the first grade reading aide pulled him through. Now he has his nose in a book non-stop. From the Friday All School Mass to the no-cut sports team, there is a huge spirt of compassionate Christianity felt throughout the school. I know we're at the right school when my 4yr old says she's silly because Jesus made her that way. Recently, a preschooler was diagnosed with a large brain tumor and the community of SMG pulled together so quickly it was dizzying. Instantly there were prayer chains and vigils, rosaries, adoration of the Eucharist, meals, cards and video greetings from his classmates - all happened w/in 1 to 2 days of his diagnosis. Miraculously the surgeons found no cancer where even they expected to see nothing else. It's a strong & inclusive community. And the quality of education: aides in every class, small class sizes (about 20/class), advanced classes & clubs, Spanish from 3rd grade on, 1:1 laptops in jr high, Eno Boards everywhere, gifted teachers. Great school!

Great teachers; great curriculum; making huge strides towards technology in the classroom for a private school. Our three children love the school and the Christian community atmosphere. We highly recommend this school.

I have a first grader at SMG and couldn't be happier. As other reviews have stated, the support and care the children receive is fabulous. In kindergarten each child meets with the reading specialist to identify children who need extra help. The academics are great and the teachers are very accessible. Technology at the school is great with eno boards in almost every classroom and a laptop available for each junior high student. The community is amazing. The sense of family is everywhere. I feel so good knowing my child is in such a loving, faith filled atmostphere. SMG is a wonderful school!!!

We have two children attending St Mary of Gostyn and could not be prouder of their accomplishments there! The sense of community is second to none, the parents all get involved and there are so many extra activities to be a part of. The kindergarten reading program exceeds expectations and puts our children above the neighboring schools. The kind manners of all the children we have met is a welcoming relief, and reassures us the decision we made to send our children to a Catholic school for a stronger education and a faith-building community was a sound one. St Mary of Gostyn is about "paying it forward" thank you for partnering with us to raise such conscientious, creative and thought provoking children!

St Mary of Gostyn has been a wonderful choice for our family. All three of my children attend school here and we find that it s an excellent place to educate your children. It s more than the outstanding academics, extracurricular activities and enrichment programs; it s truly a place where there is a tremendous sense of community. Every parent is welcome to participate, but I never expected the level of enthusiasm and passion for one school. Also, to enhance the tradition methods of teaching St Mary of Gostyn is also very cutting edge. They have ENO Boards in almost every class room and each of the junior high children are supplied with their own laptops to enhance the learning process. In my experience, St Mary of Gostyn School prepares children to be well rounded, highly educated leaders of tomorrow.

Poor leadership and rampant nepotism create an environment where it comes down to "who" you know, not "what" you know for students. Preschool through 3rd grade are good teachers. 4th grade is where teachers lack creativity and begin to exclude students who show any kind of creative or critical thinking skills beyond teachers' formulaic rubrics. Middle school religion is in need of a major overhaul too as my child would report erratic behavior and grading from that instructor frequently. Really enjoyed the middle school math teachers though. There are better private schools to consider and I'm glad I did!

The curriculum delivery is outmoded, and the school environment is stifling for children. Rote learning is the norm, creative and critical thinking is not.

There is effort here, but facilities lack. Classes are crowded and teachers can not give the students attention needed - especially those above or below average. No playground for the kids unless they enjoy playing in a parking lot. Good sense of community, but we can still get that going to church. Not worth the money, especially with the public school district ranked so highly. We're overall disappointed with the academics.

I have three children attending and I love our school. I have found that the teachers are very easy to communicate with. They are available to help the children and are happy to do so. Parents are very involved and I have found the school community to be warm and welcoming. The kids do eat lunch in their classrooms, but go outside either before or after eating. We are very happy here.

After reading a comment about a rule that children's work cannot be displayed, I felt I needed to reply. I have never heard of such a rule and work is displayed often throughout the building. As a teacher, I love to see what the students are doing in their other classes.

My child has attended St Mary's for the last two years and my family is extremely happy! The new preschool teacher is a breath of fresh air with a fantastic curriculum! My children feel welcome and are learning so much. My daughter was reading by the time she left preschool. The kindergarten teacher adopted a new reading program this year to challenge the incoming children. The teachers are all available by email, phone and preschool has an open door policy. Communication between teachers and parents has been great. Yes, we pay tuition, but it is our choice. And yes, some of the class sizes are larger than the public school. But again, this is our choice to have our children attend this school. The school is family oriented and everyone ssupports everyone especially in times of need. I wouldn't have my children anywhere else.

Large classrooms. They are very crowded especially during lunch where they have to eat at their desks through middle school. Recently there have been many families leaving the preschool and school. I am sticking it out hoping that this will lead to smaller class sizes. If it wasn't so crowded, I don't think the other things would bother me as much.

We have 3 children in the school, each started at Kindergarten, and have been extremely happy with the administration and overall organization of the school. The transition of not having attended the preschool was no problem. The average class size of my kid's grades, 4th grade and lower, is about 27 per class. There are 2 classes per grade. I feel the principal does a great job of communicating with the school parents and recently the H.S.A. has added a forum to their meetings to address school wide parent concerns to the administration. We toured both Catholic schools and our public school and from the first impression have been happy with our choice

Sometime this school is not about the kids, but about rules that do not make sense! No work from the children is allowed to be hung up. It has been quite a dissapointment.

The St. Mary s of Gostyn Experience Our son attended 8 years. When he came to St. Mary s in 1st grade he was a fun loving but somewhat shy little boy who sometimes struggled with his schoolwork. With each passing grade he was shown love, made to feel special, was recognized for his strengths and skillfully guided in the areas needed with attention that made it seem at times as if he were the only kid in the school. By eight grade as he prepared for high school he was ready for a few honors classes, had all the self confidence a boy his age needed and moved on with a rock solid foundation spiritually, academically and socially all in the proper order. And it s not just our son, it was all the children. The St. Mary s experience teaches love, self respect, respect for authority, respect for each other and a love of God. The St. Mary s experience is one where the peer pressure is to achieve and succeed . . . a truly amazing accomplishment in today s society! I suppose they all learn some of this at home, but make no mistake, they learn an awful lot of it here. The St. Mary s experience is not an accident and it is not luck. It is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work by some of the most dedicated people we have had the pleasure to know. If you live in this area there is no other choice. If you do not live in the area you should think about moving!

My daughter did not attend the preschool either but she had a great kindergarten experience. I noticed that there were some kids that were always together but these relationships are largely fostered by parents and I would rather my child not take issue with this and find her own way, which she did just fine. Lunches are in the classroom but everyday the children go out for recess right after lunch. Opportunities are there to communicate with the teachers via email or special meetings. Curriculums are available for each grade level to help your child prepare and/or advance. Bottom line, keep and open mind and realize the grass will always be greener on the other side. The education received from St. Mary's will be a wonderful mix of religious education (which is invaluable in today's society) and an excellent academic education.

My daughter had a very hard time fitting in. This school has a preschool and if you don't attend their preschool we felt it was difficult to become part of the group. The acedemics are average and the children have to eat lunch in their rooms. Not alot of opportunity to move around.

My children are excelling in their academic and religious instruction and have made wonderful friends. Parents have numerous opportunities to share their talents. The teaching staff continues to improve with the recent addition of several excellent experienced teachers. Many extra-curricular activities including athletics, academic clubs, environmental and students for life groups, and alter servers reinforce Christian morals and give children of all interests fun opportunities outside the classroom. A large scouting program, band and choir round out the offerings. Another unique feature offered is the Children's Education Garden, a place to play and learn for the entire parish, especially children. Throughout the school year, the children provide donations and service to those in need in their local, national and international community, preparing them for their role as Catholic Christians when the leave for high school and beyond. We are very pleased to partner with St. Mary's in educating our children.

The inconsistency in curriculum from one grade to the next is very disturbing. I expected there to be communication as to what needs to be accomplished by year end so that it would be picked up the following year. This doesn't happen. The discipline policy and enforcement of the dress code is poor. However, what lacks the most is on the part of administration to address the concerns of the parents. Teacher contracts are renewed year after year when they have not proved to be effective teachers and there have been numerous complaints concerning their teaching approaches. Administration's solution seems to be to move them into another grade. If your child struggles with school work, this is not the school for them. Class sizes are far too large for any individual attention and the student will fall further behind in their work.

I have two children with learning disabilities. They have received excellent help. The kindergarten teacher caught it both times at the same point I did. Help is there for the asking. But you need to ask, help and work with the teachers and your child. The special reading teacher is very good. I had the opportunity to meet with the public school system regarding my son and St. Mary's teachers were doing more and were more knowledgable than the help he would receive from the public school system. The class sizes are big but if your child is able to focus on the tasks at hand, they will do fine. Some teachers are better than others and they each have their own teaching styles as in all schools. St. Mary's have school masses with excellent participation from the students. It is a big school with many good qualities.

If your child is struggling to keep up or is above average, this is not the school for them. The classrooms average 35 students and are overcrowded. Very little extra help is available to students who are struggling. Grading is inconsistant. I have received progress reports that indicated that my child was doing poorly in almost every subject, yet 4 weeks later the report card shows B's, C's and even an A or two! Talking with teachers is difficult and the teachers don't communicate with teachers in the other grades. In the 6 years my child atended this school she had only two teachers who I considered good. I feel like I paid $3,000.00+ a year for a substandard education.
