This is a great school! My daughter attended the school for two years, she loves teachers there, loves the classes there. Every improvement she made, she received a reward for. She was an introverted girl, but in the end she could take part in the school speech team! She didn't know art so much, but she could create a medal by herself and it was exhibited in the hall display case! She is only a modest girl, but in the last month before she graduated, the headmaster wrote a letter for her in person, praising all the small progresses she made in the past two years! We never met the principal, but she cared about my child! We love this school more than we can say!!!
the new principal is horrible. she has taken away so many rewards and have made the classes harder then they were and they were hard before. freshmen who shouold just be getting used to high school are moved into an AP human geography class instead of normal honors like previous years. her and the district kept the school open in the middle of a flood. there were houses that you couldn't get out of because they were surrounded by water and they were still supposed to go to school.
EGHS is a great school. Im a freshman, and what goes on in this school is great. But EGHS isn't so perfect. I know that a fight breaks out almost every day, kids are smoking on-campus, and getting past the security is no problem at all. if EGHS really starts to cut down on all the kids that do itiotic stuff, we may actually pass the NCLB act. Oh, and no wonder the old principal stepped down.
This is the best school I have ever seen. As a student that graduated from EGHS I am very happy with everything that the school had to offer me. The teachers are amazing and very understanding. I never had a bad teacher at EGHS they are all very nice. I would love to send my children there. I work for a school district now and I know that District 214 is one of the best.
I am a graduate of EGHS and I feel that parents should hear from an 'average' student that attended the school from fall 1999 and graduated in 2003. It is what every high school is you don't do anything you don't get anything out of it but misery. I found clubs to join and was active in the Japanese exchange program for two years. To be the only school in district that offers such a language and to be able to go to Japan is a wonderful opportunity I am grateful for. The teachers are available for help and if they are not there is always a teacher that teaches the subject and can help. Many do not give this school the credit it deserves. Sure some books need to be bought but that is the districts choice not the high schools. I would gladly send my children to EGHS.
These past years have seen some of the best athletic and extracurricular clubs in the history of the school. School spirit 'gang green' is contagious. As far as teachers, I've had them all and I dont think you'll find better.
EGHS has the potential to be a good school based on public, not private schooling standards. The faculty are rather distanced from the students, and they are seldom available for help. Fairly intelligent students are outcasted from others in the school. The school is also cutting back on faculty and classes, so classrooms tend to be very overcrowded, providing the class that you wanted to take was not cancelled. If anything, the sports programs should receive financial cuts, considering only a handful of EGHS graduates turned pro. Also, the school needs new textbooks, especially in the science courses (as they are very outdated and are not informative.) The website needs some serious help, also. The overall atmosphere is not positive, and the faculty excessively focus on students' mistakes. The PE equipment could also be updated. Overall, EGHS is a decent, not superb school. Consider private schools, if at all possible.
Elk Grove is a great school with a lot of opportunities for students to achieve. The benefit of Elk Grove to me was the many extracurricular activities beyond sports that were offered to students. I could stay involved without having to be a jock.
I feel this school is a great school, but the principle and the teachers have to be more aggressive towards bullying, truancy, and drug use in school.
To the child who wrote in March 2005 about his displeasure with EGHS: I feel sorry for you. I have 3 children, 2 who have graduated for Elk Grove and one who is the same age as you, just completing freshman year. They love their school and they get out of school what they put into it. There is plenty of information given to parents and students receive info daily in advisory. My children receive(d) an excellent education and my 2 oldest children are currently in college on scholarships. EGHS has something for everyone and will help you reach your goals in all aspects if you are willing to go for it!
Even though this review section is for parents, I thought the opinion of someone who actually attends this school would help. I am a freshman, and I'm not impressed by my school at all. Because of EGHS failing the NCLB Act, I am considering switching to another District 214 school. The course selection they offer is great, but most of my teachers are rather monotoned and boring. Good luck being informed about anything- they never tell parents or students anything of importance. For instance, I never even got the letter informing me of the option to switch schools, I found out through friends. If you are not a social person- good luck surviving! The website is horrible! RMHS has class notes on their website; ours hasn't been updated since like 1995. I hope I can switch A.S.A.P.! I'm sorry if you don't like the way EGHS sounds, but that's the truth!
I have had 2 students graduate from EGHS, both received over 20 AP credits and attend very selective universities. My children were very prepared for the competitive college environment. The teaching at EG is top-notch, and the teachers are very responsive, creative and caring. Administrators are very involved, and have an obvious priority of making EGHS an academic force. Athletics, on the other hand, are not such a priority. Opportunities for student involvement are many, technology is superior!
Elk Grove H S has the potential to be a great school. Unfortunately, the new administration is leading this school toward mediocrity, at best. There are some top notch, excellent teachers here (about 30%)but most are just average. I have had 2 children graduate from this school. My youngest child just graduated and will be attending a very selective university. All in all, EGHS is a very good school that could go either way.
