My niece attends Flossmoor Hills Elementary School. I am very impressed with the school in general and the fact that she has been afforded the opportunity to use the IPAD provided by the school to advance her technical skills. She likes the school, her classmates, teachers and on several occasions during the summer said she "couldn't wait for school to start". That in itself speaks volumes for the school!!!
Flossmoor Hills is a hidden gem of a school. Communication between parents, teachers, and administrators is top notch. My 5th grader has an enthusiastic teacher Michele Jeros. This is her 3rd year there, and her previous teacher, Mrs. Davis was also very hands on and personable. I am very satisfied with Flossmoor Hills.
This school is amazing and very wonderful, it has a lot of good teachers, students, administrators, and a good principal.
As a parent within the Flossmoor Hills Elementary School community! I rate Flossmoor Hills as one of the best public schools in the south suburbs. The building leadership is Superior. The teacher quality exceeds expectation and parental involvement in partnership with the school is outstanding. I would not allow my children to attend any other district in the state!
This is my 4 year at Flossmoor Hill and I have two children attending there. So far I'm very happy with the school. The teachers as well as the administrators are very supportive and strives to partner with the parents. I love that my children are always excited to go to school. I'm a working parent and I try to be involved in the activities at the school. Flossmoor Hill really encourages parents involvement.
We are new residents of Homewood and were told by our RE agent, as well as checking school maps to determine the school our son would attend, believing it would be Churchill, only to find out it was FH. This school is horrible in comparison to the school that my son attended last year. The teachers, principal and administrators only care about one thing and that is test scores! They teach to the tests, and in my opinion do a poor job of the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic. My son has less than half the amount of schoolwork as he's had in the past, he never has any writing assignments, barely does grammar, language arts, etc... I totally agree with the other comments about the high taxes being paid to a school district that does a poor job of educating our children.
My child has been attending for 2 years, and I have consistently been disappointed by the office staff. The amazing thing to me is they changed office staff this year and they are still rude. It is apparent to me that if you are not a stay at home parent who can hang out at the school and 'volunteer' then you will not receive the extra warm smile. I remember before I enrolled my child 2 parents warned me against placing my child in that school and I wished I had listened. However, I will say the Kindergarten teachers are excellent! There are parents who have children in 3rd and 4th grades still talking about Ms. Waller in particular...the absolute best. I think it's so unfair that while I pay all these Flossomoor taxes I can not choose to enroll my child in another school within the district.
I currently have a second child at Flossmoor Hills School. My child that now attends Parker had an excellent and productive learning experience as well. My daughter is flourishing, and I find that the curriculum is rigorous and presents the challenge neccesary for future advancement. I completely disagree with any parent who feels that the environment at Flossmoor Hills is violent or hostile. I further find it extremely false that children are not successful at performing as above average learner. It is not the administrator, nor the teacher;s job to be the sole education resource. Parents are the first teachers!! Having two children upleveled, in advanced and gifted classes; it is how you best utilize resources available. Flossmoor Hills is an outstanding school that has overcome the obstacle of inconsistent leadership and prides itself in remarkable PTO participation in addition to enhanced learning environment and superior instructional teaching from veteran educators.
I have two children at FH who have scored above average on the ISAT for the last 2 years. My one child scored at the 98th percentile last year in reading and math. The principal is always available when you need her. I have made an effort to contribute to the school as a room parent and have seen first hand how hard they work, meaning principal and teachers. There is always room for improvement from the school and the parents. But overall the school has met my expectations.
The school does a poor job at managing and protecting students from violence and hostility. In addition the school performs poorly at developing above average children. We are very disappointed in the administrations ability to reply and act on parent requests. If we could afford to send our children elsewhere we would.
I have two children at FHS who are doing extremely well and are scoring well above the state norms. During my 4 years of involvement with FHS the teachers have been EXCELLENT and the curriculum has been challenging. Parental support is very high and our PTO is arguably most active in District 161. Overall the children who start at FHS from kindergarten perform very well and receive a high-quality education. Despite constant roadblocks set up by the District 161 School Board FHS has, and is still excelling due to a strong group of professional, educated, and dedicated parents who are serious about their childrens education.
Flossmoor Hills has an excellent curriculum, which is the same curriculum district-wide. The teachers overall are excellent and they have made the difference during the periods of principal transition. I've been happy with the school because my children have been challenged through various academic programs such as gifted, up-leveling, and enrichment. The parent involvement is amazing and is one of the reasons why the school is so great.
I really had a bad experience with FH when I transfered my child in during her 4th grade year. My daughters teacher gave an absurd amount of homework and her teaching stye was not quite right. I will not be sending my child back there next year. My child was once an honor roll student but now she hates going to school. I am very disappointed.
FH is truly a great school. There have been problems with administration changes and retention of teachers in recent years, however as of now, things are really turning around. There are many opportunities available for students and families to interact with one another and the teachers are very involved.
The school seemed to be okay initially. However, as the year progressed I noticed that the quality of education fell, because of lack of parent participation and lack of the school board to act on important issues. For example, my daughter was in a reading class for almost a year in which the teacher did not teach. She let the children play, and gave them tons of homework! No true teaching, evaluation of learing or learning went on! Finally a few parents were so enraged that the school board started to take action.
