Galena High School

Galena High School has 13 Illinois State Scholars this year! I continue to be impressed by this school, and my children have had a top notch education here. Two have gone on to earn their Bachelor and master degrees, and agree that GHS was instrumental in their success at college.

With only 30% of students prepared for a 4 year college, a high teen pregnancy rate and a lack of new technology training this is not a great school. If you have to live in Galena and have high school age students, think private school.

I've had three children attend GHS. Galena is an excellent school in so many ways! I can't say enough about it. In addition to terrific academics, GHS offers a top-notch drama program, music department, and scholastic bowl team. Many sports are offered, as well. The teachers are super--very knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile for the students to excel.

Lots of emphasis on sports, especially football. Only one foriegn language offered and it is not offered well. Teachers lack in creativity. Band program is exceptional, but the vocal department is very bad. The one positive thing is that the students are very close and seem to accept everyone who moves to the area.
