I disagree with the comments posted Sept. 11, 2004. I have two children at the school and have been a parent there for a number of years. Maybe back in 2004 things were a little different, but I have a child with academic difficulties and one who is involved with the A & E program at the school. Both are getting great educations academically as well as becoming well-rounded adults with all of the community related, character building activities that are available to the students.
Western Avenue has the strongest leadership amongst all it's sister schools. My son has attended this school for the last 3 years and I have never worked with such attentive teachers and staff. The Principal, Kathy Pease, is an incredible and inspirational leader and has made this school a role model for all schools in the 304 district and beyond. If you are lucky enough to have your children attend this school you will know and experience what a 'true' commitment to education is all about. Western Avenue is at the top!
Very Nice, Friendly Teachers, Great Staff.
Western Avenue school is a true community school. By that I mean the community within its boundries fully supports the school in all areas such as education, after school enrichment programs, sports programs and when the school calls on parents to volunteer there is never a shortage of people willing to help out. On the educational side recent Illinois tests show Western Avenue to be outstanding in academics compared to other schools in the area and state. Western is lucky to have a highly educated and devoted staff to educate our children. Western is a great school in a great community. I have 3 children at Western.
For most parents, Western Avenue is a struggle on the academic side. Most of the instruction is below grade level and parents are actively supplementing at home or through outside resources. Maximizing a child's academic progress is not a priority. Children are not even given grades and parent are left with very little concrete information about their child's progress. However, for those students with disabilities or special needs, it does have a lot to offer.
