My child transferred to this high school after having wonderful experiences elsewhere. Unfortunately, they did not continue here. The quality of instruction here is less than average based on other schools my child attended, extracurricular activities other than sports are almost nonexistent and the atmosphere is less than welcoming to anyone 'new in town.' Last year, a mandatory concert was scheduled on Mother's Day which, in my opinion, shows a lack of respect for the importance of family connections. My child has even had problems with simple things like getting transcripts mailed to prospective colleges. While my child has taken classes with a couple of teachers who were better than average, overall, this school has little to recommend it. It has all the disadvantages associated with small town educators and educations.

While I loved attending GHS, there are improvements to be made. Academics are about average, as is parental involvement. But the availability of extracurriculars is a bit sparse. I'm also concerned because the long-time choir/music teacher is about to retire, leaving huge shoes to fill. Aside from sports, there's no real extracurriculars to speak of for the 'non-athletes'. If Gillespie could get more clubs and groups outside of sports, the school would have received a higher rating from me.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Illinois used the Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE) to test students in grade 11 in reading, math and science. The PSAE is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Illinois. The goal is for all students to score at or above the state standard.
