My role is as a mental health therapist and family advocate from a community center. In all my interactions the school has been very supportive and resourceful for both children and their families. The teachers and education specialist ensure that class sizes are small, that teacher aids are present in the class rooms to support each child. I have seen time-outs in progress; positive reinforcement; and various implementations to help the child to take a break, to refocus, or to channel frustration in a meaningful manner. All the staff appear to be educated on the needs of how to approach a child, from maintenance to reception; to lunchroom workers--all necessary persons to reinforce that a child is not defined by his issues, and that he or she is not a bad child.

These expectations have been adjusted to better align with the Common Core State Standards, a multi-state initiative that established year-by-year guidelines outlining the grade-specific skills and content students need to stay on the path to college and career readiness. The higher expectations of the new standards will result in a downward shift of where students rank in meeting or exceeding standards.
