My son has been attending Giant Steps since kindergarten- he's currently in 6th grade. (Our public school district can not provide adequate services for kids with even moderate autism, so we petitioned to have him placed here.) Giant Steps has been a life-saver. The extremely dedicated group of professionals understand autism- they've seen it all- and what it's like to have a kid with specific needs. Caring, nurturing staff- who deserve much higher pay then they receive-are ready to help you and your child learn, grow and navigate through life. A truly wonderful place to entrust your child.
My daughter has thrived since enrolling at Giant Steps 3 years ago. While she used to strike out with aggression, she has learned to use her words in non-preferred situations. She loves going to school. The staff is incredibly dedicated, and the therapies they provide in-school are outstanding, the teachers and therapists really design teaching methods to the individual student...it is not a one size fits all curriculum.
The positives first: GS has a strong OT/sensory program for Autistic kids. They have all the therapy services: Speech, OT, behavioral, recreational. The negative: The afterschool program is completely unaffordable. Almost 100.00 per day. Also the school did not honestly communicate with me in regards to my child's behaviors and progress. I was lead to believe that he was progressing when in fact, he was not. They sent me a well worded email that they could not support his needs when they reassured me at the beginning that this was THE school for autistic kids with difficult behaviors. Disappointed.
