My daughter attended this school from Kindergarten - 4th grade and greatly excelled here. We were thoroughly impressed with the teachers and the administration staff. Communication was excellent and I just can't say enough good things about Eastlawn. My daughter was sad to leave this school for Northview when the district reorganized.
Poor communication with parents. Discipline is not applied uniformly or fairly. Parents are not treated with respect.
My child has attended Eastlawn for two years now and I am fully impressed with the school. Principal Mr Obrecht, teachers, and staff are all wonderful. You can see that they care and they show respect to the students and parents. My only concern with the school is the lack of parental involvement. Even if you work full time you should try to take a little time to get to know the school and help when ever possible. There are many ways to be involved in your child s school and not all of them require you to be there during the daytime. Parents and Teachers make a difference.
Eastlawn is rated 4th out of the 4 elementary schools. It also has the highest low income and transient student population. The teachers and principal do the best they can, unfortunately some parents expect to teach the students every aspect of life, this includes common manners. The staff has morning assemblies to remind the children of what the behavioral expectations are.
This school is ranked #4 of the 4 schools in the district. Unfortunately, the teachers get very little support from parents. Some feel it is the schools responsibility to teach the child everything, this includes manners and common courtesy. The principal every morning has an assembly to discuss words of the week and remind students of behavior expectations. This is the rationale behind sending unruly children out of the classroom immediately. This is so the other children are able to continue to learn.
I think that the teachers need to be more responsible for thier classrooms instead of sending the children out for discipline, the new method is embarrassing to the child and can lower self esteem. The teacher also needs more help in the classroom that way she won't get so frustrated when a child needs her.
Principal Roger Obrecht administers a good elementary school. I have two reasons for commenting. #1. My grandson attends this school. The teachers are friendly and concerned. Students are treated with respect and kindness. The school is orderly and the students are learning. #2. I am retired but I substitute teach in Rantoul City schools. Last year I taught Kindergarten, 4th and 5th grade classes three times at Eastlawn Elementary School. So, I can see the workings of the school being there from the outside. I am glad that my grandson is attending. If I am not working, I go over to the school every day and meet my grandson after school... so.. I see what's happening! It's a positive learning environment!
