Shirland is a 'Gem". We currently have a new Principal/Superintendent who has completely taken Shirland School, and the entire community under his wing. The changes in the last couple of years are so refreshing. Our test scores are excellent, we now have current technology in all our classrooms, the Teachers are committed to their students and each class is a close knit group of scholars. The small school was a great place for my oldest daughter to learn with extra care and concern from the staff. My youngest is currently excelling in reading and math. Next year she will be able to start playing volleyball and basketball. After that band and chorus. So much to look forward to experiencing.

This little school of about 150 kids is a wonderful place for children to learn!! I am also a former student of Shirland and moved back into the district so my 3 children could attend! They love it and would not want to be anywhere else! Shirland School is the best!!!!!!

This school is small with great teachers & small classrooms! Everyone knows each other & supports each other! Kids enjoy small classrooms & their wonderful teachers as well as their bus drivers & cooks! They also learn a lot! We are so proud of our little school in Shirland IL!

This school has an extremely high amount of parental involvement, which makes life wonderful for the classroom teacher! The community is extremely involved and supportive of the school. Small class sizes allow for a smooth learning environment, and students tend to relate to one another very well, considering they grow up together throughout the years. Overall, it's a small community, but students are given a chance to learn in an environment that they are comfortable and safe in. They are given a challenging education, and the community is there to support them along the way!

I have never been so disappointed. The lack of communication is astounding. Bullying is ignored and complaints are passed around like a game of hot potato.

This school instructs only at a high academic level.Children with learning limitations do not thrive as well as their peers without IEPs or learning disabilities. The district is small and the teaching staff is paid the lowest salary of the four elementary districts that feed into the community high school. Sometimes the district finds a gem that will work for lower wages because there is no problem with drugs, gangs, violence, etc. Most of the time we get the staff we pay for. Ethnic diversity is not well tolerated. Many people in the community choose to homeschool or use religious private schools rather than send their children to this school. The school has employed three different principals over the past three years and the county sheriff sends squads out to maintain order during graduations from eighth grade.

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
