I went to this school and they teach you great things. You have many opportunities to try new things. There are many after school activities that help the kids get involved with their school. I started kindergarten there in 2007. The principle has always been kind to everyone and had a bad joke before every school play. He was fun to be around. I personally loved the writing curriculum. I have loved writing stories from it. The one problem was I had a teacher who was out a lot one year and I felt like I did not get a better opportunity to learn. It has been nominated for the National Blue Ribbon Award and I am very proud. I love Rose and everybody in it. It's a great school.

This school needs an intervention in learning how to help children with learning and attention issues. The mainstream teachers are doing a great job. So if your child is in the middle percentiles, no worries. The special education is sadly lacking due to the leadership at that school. Although, The OT and the Speech and Language pathologist are doing a very good and focused job. The teachers administering the interventions; although, they are nice people, do not use best practice nor do they use proven programs with integrity. It's unfortunate; especially taking into account that other schools in the same district are doing a great job with kids dealing with challenges. They have time and money but it's squandered in an unfocused, "throw everything at the student including the kitchen sink " sort of way. Please, give them more training so they can be more effective for these students that I know they care about. They also need to stop feeling sorry for them and start having an expectation for success. The kids know if you believe in them.

Barbara Rose is an excellent elementary school. My children have been there for 3 years, and we've always felt they were getting an excellent education in a caring setting. The principal is very open and communicative and friendly and has high expectations for the kids, and the teachers are the same. I think the principal provides excellent leadership. For all 3 years, thru 6 teachers, I felt the teachers worked very hard with my children to help them learn and thrive. I have had regular meetings and contact w/ teachers for each of my kids, for different issues, and I have felt it was a great partnership. The quality of the curriculum is outstanding. And the student body is extremely diversified now, and has been for the 3 years I've witnessed. I can't say anything bad at all about this school. The 220 district is also very solid, with good leadership by the superintendent, and no school board shenanigans.

I don't agree with the last parent who complained about the Principal. I had a child with special needs at Rose, and the care, sensitivity and personal attention with which the teachers, staff and Mr. Carlson spoke volumes and did wonders for his confidence. Mr. Carlson started at Rose the same year we did, in 2006, and he was always on top of things. It blew my mind that he knew all the kids by name and even the parents! He's a very hands on principal who genuinely cares about the students. I can say that for every teacher there--and I had two kids there, so I had experience with the majority of them. Yes, class sizes have increased, but they deal with it well, having two teacher's aides in grades 1-3. I do wish they had a writing resource teacher, but reading resource did a great job with both my kids. The IEP team was very good - especially speech, OT. I wish the Psychologist was a bit more proactive, though. Still, I highly recommend this school.

The problem with this school starts with the Principal, and filters down from there. They have zero expectation level for kids who have even the slightest learning differences. I have had 3 children attend this school, and thankfully was able to transfer out of there. Had I known it was an option to transfer to another school within the district I would have done it long ago. The teachers show genuine concern and compassion for their students, however, I feel that they are given limited resources (or permission from the Principal) to bring out the best in every student. It's a shame this school lacks quality leadership, because there are some really great teachers there willing to go the extra mile, but unfortunately, the Principal does not lead by example. Since we have left this school, my child has not only made significant progress, but is much more confident, and sooo much happier.....as are we!

We have been at Rose for 3 years now. My kids love it & so do I. Our Principal is very involved. There are many events where he reads to the students. I think that is great. Between 6 classes/teachers, we have never had more than 22 students in a class. The teachers have all been wonderful & good at communicating with parents. I highly recommend our school!

I have two children that have attended Rose since kindergarten. The experience has been fantastic. The teachers are great and very communicative with the parents. There are always opportunities to help out with the children and the education difficulty has been consistently at a higher level compared to nearby districts. The new principal is very hands on and seems to really care about the school and children very much. The diverse student body has opened up my children's eyes to other cultures. They have had friends from Japan, India, England, Canada, China, Greece, and Italy to name just a few. That alone is a valuable learning advantage. The test scores have been consistently good, as well. At Rose it is more than a school. It truly has been like an extended family.

This is our 1st year and we loved it. Teachers are great and the over crowding issue is overstated. I think it's about politics more than anything. The music programs seem to be very good due to the staff. The parent involvement it very good at least in 1st grade. Of course the parents that give their time are the same group of people. We need new parents to step up. The only negative I witnessed is this is not enough diversity even though there is a diverse group of families attending.
