Amount of homework: Not enough
June 16, 2015
My son did not have as much homework as compared to kids that attended other public and private schools. I don't want and excessive amount but do want him to be challenged.

- submitted by a parent

June 16, 2015
My son just finished his freshman year at SEHS. He is a strong student and took mainly advanced placement or honors courses which he found to be good classes. Sadly his standard classes he found to be too easy and the kids in the classes not interested in learning. For sophomore year he will bein all AP / Honors courses and hoping the challenge is there along with the student participation. My son complained that there were daily fights in the hallways but honestly I saw that in my high school as well. You cannot attend a public school and not be exposed to every walk of life. It is unfortunate that SEHS has a higher population of kids that are not interested in learning.

Teacher effectiveness: Effective
June 16, 2015
Teachers were very proactive in communicating with parents and students about upcoming assisgment and tests.

Develops grit: Neutral
June 16, 2015
I do feel that some of the curriculum could be enhances to challenge the students a bit more. While I don't want my son to have endless homework he did not seem to have as much as some of his peers in other non-U46 schools.

Develops empathy: Agree
June 16, 2015
The school allows the kids to show their thoughts and feeling on a variety of subjects. They even allowed the students to hold a peaceful protest march in the halls for race equality.

Develops honesty: Agree
June 16, 2015
Teachers held kids accountable for their school work and provided students with tools to keep track of their own grades and assignments.

My daughter is an honors student and will be a senior next year. I read some of the reviews and felt the need to defend SEHS. A lot of what you get out of school is what you put into it, parents included. The teachers are doing their best with what students they are given. I have observed classrooms and the level of disrespect students show teachers is disgusting. Those children will definitely not a good experience nor will the teachers make much progress educating them. My daughter has excelled and is receiving many scholarships to college and she did it all at a U46 school!

Definitely the best out of all U-46 high schools, but not as good as it is said to be. Individuals at this school are always out to get one another and its simply disgusting. Almost half of the teachers are only there for their paychecks and not the view and idea of educating students. Everyone at this school has a problem with more than one person, that's for sure. On a more positive side, SEHS provides so many extra-curricular activities and sports! Unfortunately,if you're not a very out-going person, school may seem like the worst place ever, but eventually you'll meet great people and get along well with teachers.

This school claims to want to help every student succeed and my child has been theough nothing but hell here. When the prior priciple was here everything was a lot better. The guidence counselors just pick and choose who they want to help. Thwy do not help kids with special accomodations at all. My daughter attends this school and dreads going to it every single day. Before South elgin my daughter was getting As and Bs. Now my daughter is on the border. She used to love school. They need to really assess their interview techniques, because the teachers do not care about their students success.

This school is poorly run and the Staff care more about getting their way than helping students financially or preparing them for college. Don't get me wrong, the teachers are great, the administrators are the ones who ruin it for everybody. The guidance office does not go out of their way at all to help students prepare to succeed. They are rude and pick random targets and refuse to help students get better prepared for college even with parents involved.

The student body at SEHS has a tremendous spirit and deserves needed funds to help build a stadium for sporting events. All of the student athletes work hard to set new standards at SEHS. The school is only in its fifth year and there are many great things in its future. Your gift of award will go along way to provide the needed funds to further develop the athletic programs. Please become a part of this future and support the Storm!

Our children have always attended private schools. However, last year our oldest transferred to South Elgin High School to participate in TAP, which is a teacher prep program. We were concerned about the decision at the time but it turned out to be a wonderful experience for our daughter. The teachers and courses at SEHS are superb.

South Elgin High School is a wonderful school! The orchestra has a great program and a beautiful auditorium in which to perform. I've had one student attend all four years and graduate and now have two more currently attending. All of my children have had good grades and no difficulties with the teachers. The counselors have been helpful in directing and assisting them with decisions. There is a lot of school spirit and everyone; parents, teachers and students working together to make South Elgin High School the best it can be.

South Elgin is a beautiful High School with an outstanding caring staff. My daughter is a freshman there and feels like a person, not a number. She is actually excited to go to school everyday because of the lessons taught and the relationships she maintains with her teacher and other classmates. My daughter is a cheerleader and loves to cheer for the school that she is so proud to attend, South Elgin High School.

The students continue to excel both academically and with school spirit! The teachers continue to dedicate themselves to improving the academic and perosonal experience for every student in our high school! The administration continues to support and encourage both the faculty and the students to become better, active professionals and citizens within our school and our community! All of these facts show through our successful sports teams this year, our great parades, hosting our community dinners, raising $ for 'Make A Wish' Foundation kids, and so much more. Anyone that witnesses one of our assemblies can certainly see it all!

School Spirit remains high at SEHS with motivated students who genuinely seem to enjoy the atmosphere that is represented by the excellent teachers and faculty who strive to maintain the highest education standards. The school participation in extracurricular activities is a enjoyed by the student body largely due to the coaching staff and other volunteers that step up to make SEHS the best high school in the entire u-46 school district. The technology utilized at SEHS is nothing but the best high-tech from computer lab to tech lab! They have an excellent physical education program with a modern weight room, well-maintained pool and locker room facilities. The architectural plans for the new school stadium is simply state-of-the-art and will soon come to fruition with the fund raising programs put in place by the fabulous PTO volunteers. Great school and excellent leadership team (Principal, Assistant Principals). School spirit is evident everyday and there is so much for the students to do. There seems to be a lot of cursing when the students are outside but I may be super-sensitive to the vularity that seems so prevalent among teens.

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
