My daughter attended Harmony since Kindergarten and as a young teenager at Harmony was involved in a situation where she was bullied by a fellow student. By the time my daughter came forward, it had caused serious emotional harm. The staff did nothing when it was brought to their attention. Not only that, but Roc (Steve Bonchek, Harmony's Executive Director) wouldn't even acknowledge or respond to repeated requests to address the issue. Harmony does a lot of good in the community, and for the most part their intentions are good, but they do not subscribe to the notion that bullying is a problem at their school or that it should be taken seriously. Bullying can happen at any school but if you are concerned, make sure you know going in that it isn't something that Harmony School administrators care to acknowledge.

I was assaulted by one of the high school students from this school as I dropped my child off. I don't know what the deal is or why there is any animosity towards me but no one has a right to make physical contact with me in any way. I have every right to live in this world as anyone else and can't believe that a student from this school would behave this way, so very disappointed in general with the atmosphere of this school. The people are very rude and feel entitled to to bad things to others based on their personal opinions. They think they are better than everyone else but evidently are just self absorbed, rude and mean. Not open minded nor democratic at all as they claim to be, it's all just fake not genuine.

I have mixed emotions about this school. On the one hand, my daughter loves it. On the other I have experienced some things that are disturbing at best. Like the signs of bullying/gang bullying that I have dealt with here seems a bit absurd, for if one is truly open minded and democratic, they wouldn't participate in such foolishness especially as adults. They involve their kids in it too, which is nothing to be proud of.

These people are rude, mean spirited and narcissistic. I have a friend whose child attends school here and some of the things she has told me point to immature adults and self centered rude students who bully and don't know boundaries.

My son just had the best Freshman year ever! He became a responsible student and learned the significance of honoring and respecting one's teachers. His most dreaded subject (math) is now his favorite, although not necessarily his best. He made some terrific friends. Sadly, after one year in Bloomington, we need to return to California and truly wish we could take Harmony with us! The school became family to both my boys, even when the oldest (a Junior) did not attend. As much as we will miss Harmony, I am confident that my son has the foundation in academics, social skills and community spirit to succeed in his future high school and beyond. Hats off to Roc, Tom Hastings and all the teachers and staff. I enjoyed the parent volunteer projects and found the other parents friendly. We are very grateful and blessed with the experience and highly recommend Harmony High School.

I am a professional teacher educator, so I have plenty of experience observing classrooms and determining whether or not real learning is happening. Harmony is the real deal when it comes to inspiring kids to pursue their interests and stay excited about learning. The teachers take a sane approach to hot-button issues such as assessment, technology, and homework. When the dust settles after the fallout of the disastrous educational experiment we are currently undergoing in public education, places like Harmony will be there to help us rebuild our great public school system.

Harmony School provides a great environment for kids to flourish. The school and the teachers enable the kids to forge their own path to learning. Students at Harmony are happy to be there and enjoy going to school. There is also a high degree of parent involvement in the school and the lives of the students.

Overall, a great experience for kids with caring teachers, but with some problems. Teachers do not usually have experience or expertise with special needs, and are not required to meet fed. law such as IDEA and Section 504. This was a problem for us! Leadership is a problem as well. Policies are implemented differently depending on parents relationships with the director and staff. If your child is self motivated and posesses self-discipline, this is a fantastic place where they can explore their interests. If your child is less than motivated, they can get away with whatever they want. Proceed with caution!

Harmony is the only school I have every know of that really cares for its students individually, and works to assist each student in developing at the own speed and in their own way. The bottom line for me is that my kids are happy at Harmony School. They want to go to school early and stay late. Both of them have made lasting friendships. They are learning relevant and interesting material. As a parent, I've been really pleased that the expectation of personal responsibility is predominant. I see kids living up to that expectation every single time I walk in the door. It warms my heart to see children of all different ages playing together, creating meaningful projects, keeping track of one another in a loving, non-judgmental way. I wish that more schools operated this way small, personal, democratic, friendly, safe and community-minded.

Our son started this year in Harmony's Early Childhood Program and we have been thrilled with Harmony's program and philosophy. We are moving out of the area and it is becoming apparent that Harmony is a unique school. I emailed the Federation of Alternative Schools in Minneapolis, and their representative stated 'Harmony sounds like a WONDERFUL school! I know of nothing like that here.' Harmony has set the bar very high for us and it will be hard to leave their family.

All five of our kids and my niece were 'Harmonites', spanning the 20 yr period from 1980 into 2000. Now our only grandchild is in fourth grade at Harmony. One of her teachers is Jo, who patiently taught her mother and two of her uncles there. I love the sense of 'family' created at Harmony and the continuity across the grades. These kids have already traveled & camped together & see each other in a more intimate meaningful context than is generally possible in a public school setting. Communication between teachers & students, as well as teachers & parents, is strong. It's a very community-oriented school... finding ways to get involved, make changes & give back to the community is a big part of the school's philosophy. It was one of the first schools I ever heard of insisting on recycling w/in the school and working environmental consciousness into the daily action. It's been fascinating to see Harmony evolve over more than 3 decades, becoming a major influence and model for alternate teaching styles across the country. Long live Harmony School!

Harmony School teaches the students to be responsible for their own education. The supportive staff offers the class a hands on approach to learning, with a lot of teamwork between the students required. They also encourage the students to mentor one another, and peer advisory committees are formed to help the students solve problems they are having in their social and academic lives. The small classes allow the students a higher level of class participation and better communication between teachers, students and parents.

When you peek into a Harmony classroom, you'll find a male teacher, a female teacher, and about 12 kids in each grade (primary/intermediate), with two grades in a classroom together. The children treat one another with familiarity, respect, affection and encouragement, as do adults. Students in one age group have frequent opportunity to interact with those younger and older than they. Families know one another and interact constantly. This is one place where no child is a number. The entire school practices healthy eating and care for the environment. This is such a great bolster to values that I want my children to carry with them through life. The ability of a child to express creativity at Harmony is unparalleled in my experience.

Since 2000, Harmony school has provided my sons with individualized attention. Harmony fosters a child's growth and development through thoughtful instruction/mentoring and curriculum. The school also acts as host to several community workshops and events. The Mother Hubbard's Cupboard food-bank garden, winter farmers market, all age music, dance and martial arts classes scratches the surface of that list. After a few years at Harmony, the community bike project outgrew it's space and established itself downtown near the rail-to trail pathway.. The student to teacher ratio makes a huge difference. Kids work at their own speed which allows them all to progress. The level of accountability given to children is great and you can see it in the maturity of the student body. The children learn about responsibility and they play apart in directing their learning, picking their own research topics at a very young age. They get a lot of time to read and it really shows. It is a place where my children feel safe emotionally, physically, and intellectually. It is a place where no one is turned away because of intellect, socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexuality, or nationality. Harmony School has a very positive outlook on education, a very proactive look, the children are taught to learn, to love learning, and to interact with the world and classroom around them. They respect their teachers and their peers. They receive a hands on education in a child centered environment that focuses on their needs rather than that of a system. They are taught to really learn rather than learn to take a test etc. The teachers are really involved, the parents are really involved, and the students are really involved.

My 2 children have been in this school for 5 years. My son now is in Purdue! He is achieving his dream thanks to the dedicated staff at Hamony. The children get more than a basic education. They get a life time of tools to help them grow as people and to be self confident , to set tgoals and are kept to them. They are treated like real people ,not as a # as in bigger schools. The set goals, they are taught self control, self confidence, motivatioal skills and how to go out into the REAL world. God Bless everyone and thanks for helping our family become closer and helping my son reach one step closer to his Engineer dream!

I was a Harmony parent for 10 years. This is a school that expects self motivation, with individual help from the teachers. Harmony was a wonderful school for a long time. But I believe Harmony started losing the feeling of being a 'community' about 5 years ago, and the quality of education has continued to get worse since. I feel the teachers from the 7th grade up do not pay enough attention to the overall education of the children to help them reach their full potential.

My son is encouraged to set his own challenges, his own way, and then helped as needed. The teachers set a gentle, non-confrontational mood that the kids pick up on... they are still kids of course, but they're learning the right ways of dealing with conflict, cultural differences, etc. He did attend a highly-rated public school, but now studies at a place where he is learning more academically and much more about how to be a great human being.

Harmony is the best you are going to find any where. Teachers are not just teachers they are family and the same with other students.

My 9 yr old stepson goes to Marmony school and I think the school does a good job of giving children individual help. But in my personal opinion they do not discipline very well and they dont keep a good eye on the children.
