Central is a decent school if you child is in need of special education, and is a decent school (not good, but OK) if you child is gifted. However, for the vast majority of students, the school is not good. Students fall between the cracks daily. Punishment is meted out days or weeks after the behavior in question occurred. Many teachers simply do not care. I will not blame all this on the principal or teachers--the entire EVSC is a mess, and one of the most poorly run school districts I have ever encountered. No one pays the slightest bit of attention to parents. The good teachers/counselors despise the EVSC leadership, but are terrified to make their doubts public. The EVSC leadership is dismissive, rude, and uninterested in anything except their paychecks or future job prospects outside the EVSC. If there really were other choices in Evansville other than private schools or Signature, which is designed for academically-oriented students, I would never send a child to Central or any other EVSC school.

Both of my daughters graduated from Central within the last 3 years. Central has some great teachers and a wonderful principal. They seem to have allot of student involvement. My only concern is that I felt my daughters were a little underprepared for all the writing they had to do in college. I will say, however, that neither child took AP English as a senior. Central has strong science and math departments.

I graduated from CHS in 2007. I thought that i couldn't ask for a better school. There is an extreme amount of school spirit, games are great to go to. The teachers are more than willing to do everything they can to help achieve your best.

central high school is a good school no matter what middle you came from they dont treat the kids from thompkins different from the kids from harwood, central treats you the central way and that's an good way if you wanted to find a great high school for your kids check out central im a junior at central and i was bad as a freshman and sophmore year and central put up with me an still treated me the same with kindness and respect....

I got to Central High School and it has its prosd and cons. Central pulls from two middle schools which are Harwood and Thompkins. Harwood's school district is from downtown to Buena Vista Road which is a rough area of town and Thompkins pulls from Buena Vista road to the Vanderburgh/Gibson County line which is a very good area. I went to Harwood and I feel that teachers treated us lesser than the thompkins kids. I was excited for central because I thought I woul finally be in a nice school but if your coming from Harwood its no different there are good parts however. Central High scool has about 1300 so it isnt huge so if your coming from thompkins there is plenty of indiv. attn. but if coming from harwood central is extremely rough

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Indiana used the End-of-Course (ECA) assessment to test students in middle and high school in Algebra I, Biology I, and English 10. The ECA is a criterion-referenced assessment developed specifically for students completing their instruction in Algebra I, Biology I, or English 10. The goal is for all students to score at the passing level on the test.

In addition, high schools were graded on four-year (on-time) graduation rates and college and career readiness indicators including Advanced Placment exam results and industry certification exam results.

Our rating (from 1 to 10) reflects a school's overall performance. The higher the rating, the more likely the school will prepare your child for the future, so choose an above-average school (8-10) if possible. For average schools (4-7), do careful research and look for evidence that the school has high-quality programs. For below-average schools (1-3), take caution; a low-performing school may not provide the instruction or environment your child needs to learn, and you may need to supplement classroom lessons at home.

Academic rating

The academic rating is made up of equally-weighted parts: students' test scores, their academic growth (for elementary and middle schools) and their readiness for college (for high schools). The graphs below compare this school's results in each area to other schools in the city and state. Growth and college readiness ratings are coming soon, pending publication of 2012 data.
