No Structure, Over crowded Futhermore, while we are praying for our children we need to pray for the teachers thats teaching them. I do not recommend anyone send their child here. After they receive the funding for your child at the end of Oct. they nolonger care!

I'm 27 almost 28 yr olds I graduted hs in 05 I went to gavit for 8th grade well I can't say I am pleased with girls gym teacher or the 8th grade math teacher I the yr before I went to truly awful school that didn't give rats behind 2 teachers in whole school cared no one else did in previous school . Many of 8th grade teachers at gavit did try to do the right thing. Yeah the principals and assiant principals don't know whats going on really in school as big as that I'm not suprised I think schools problem is it's to big for own good. Ps the school that didn't care had half as many students if even half as many students as gavit. They do ok for ridclously huge school.

This school is a trap for teenagers, with carless teachers and low quality information. There is no control in most classrooms and the teachers act like children sometimes as well. It is not a good school, but better than nothing. It needs a major makeover.

I am not sure, this is an initial visit for this high school. Hope it's a good school.

I have attended Gavit since the 6th grade, and I will graduate this year. I took 2 AP classes last year and 5 this year. I have always loved being here, even when I didn't agree with the choices made by the administration. If anything, people should know that the problem at this school is NOT the teachers. The problem isn't even the administrators. The problem is the lack of parental concern. A lot of parents at this school either blame EVERYONE ELSE or don't care what their child does. Overall, GREAT SCHOOL!

I went to this school for 6th grade all the way to 9th grade and I have to say that its a very good school. I know attend Lowell high school and am about to graduate shortly. I hold the teachers at gavit high school for getting me where I am today. I know what I know from them. I wish I could go back one day and say thank you.

I moved away from Hammond due to the schools. My daughter went to Gavit for 6th through 8th and my son went for most of 6th. The school has to focus more on discipline than they can on education. Drugs were being sold right at the front door (per my kids), they need to worry about gangs and fighting all the time. There are some great teachers in the school but unfortunately that didn't help. Pulling my kids out was the best thing I've ever done for them.

As a student of Gavit high school I have to say that its not as bad as people make of it. I understand that some schools may not get the money they need to do certain things but people make it sound like our school is going to fall apart. I have been at Gavit since 6th grade and I love it. I love the school spirit and the teachers are helpful and kind if you give them the same respects you would like to have. && A lot of things are starting to change like having summer school online and credit recovery.

My oldest child is attending Gavit Middle school, this year and I have to admit that I had/have some reservations about my son attending a school where the middle school and HS are combined. I was and I am very impressed with the Elementary school (Thomas Jefferson) my children attend. Anyway, I like the fact that I can view my child's perfomance, attendance, and behavior on line; however, the online information is not specific; which causes me to rely on my child to tell me why and what assignments he is missing. My second concern is the lack of communication with the parents and teacher. I am a parent that is involved in my child's education; however, I do not feel like that some of the teachers make a whole lot of effort to partner with the parents.

My fourth and last child iis now attending Donald E Gavit Middle/High school.I have observed this school for some 15 years now.I have seen a steady decline especially over the last ten years. I am not satisfied with the Hammond schools in general. They are not cooperative with parents in general.

I am a concerned uncle who stepped in to help my failing nephew. The teachers were only willing to communicate to me my nephew s poor grades and bad behavior. They would not respond to my request for updates of his grades, nor would they keep me updated on his daily assignments. I was fully charged and ready to work with my nephew every night to turn his behavior and academic progress around, but I received very little to no co-operation from my nephew's teachers. To be fair, one of his teachers was very responsive and helpful, but we needed full co-operation from all of his teachers for a turn around to succeed. It seemed apparent that the school was only interested in punitive action, not in rehabilitation. On an administrative level, one of the assistant principals was very helpful and supportive; he worked diligently to help my nephew.

If your child is in Specila Ed. I strongly caution yoyu before sending them to this school. NOt enough care and attention is given to those who truly need it, the special ed. children.

In addition, high schools were graded on four-year (on-time) graduation rates and college and career readiness indicators including Advanced Placment exam results and industry certification exam results.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
