Great teachers and leadership. We love Principle Sinwelski's leadership. Building well cared for and small school atmosphere.

They have a good PALS program. The principal has been good about continuing this "mentoring" attempt.

This is the best school you could send your child to in Hammond, Indiana. The teachers are wonderful I went to this school as a child and I have to say that this is one of the only schools that I really learned something at. I wish I could go back sometimes

Kenwood is one of Hammond's better elementary school simply because of its location. Teachers are for the most part dedicated to their profession. One problem with the school is that the students are not given the opportunity to work on computers and educational software enough. Many of the students are English Language Learners and need the one on one interaction that computers can provide. The school's methods are stuck in another time era. The principal rarely seemed to walk around the school and into classrooms. I would have liked to have seen more parent involvement as well.

My sons attended Kenwood I think it is a good public school. But not a good fit for my children. The principal and staff is great. Overall a very good school and dedicated staff.

I have the highest regard for the staff, teachers & administration of Kenwood Elementary. I was heartbroken when I moved my children out of this school district. Kenwood is engaging to the parents, students and community. Kenwood has a diverse student body and extra-curricular activities that academically challenge students as well as a great sport program. I had one child attend Kenwood 2nd-5th & one that attended only 1st. My children loved Kenwood. I am very involved in my children's education. I felt welcomed to make class visits (scheduled and surprised), chaperone field trips,& volunteer for school events. There is a lot of parental involvement. The school is clean and the children are pretty well behaved. The principal is firm, yet she maintains a great relationship with the students, parents and staff alike. The teachers my children had were encouraging and supportive. Sadly,we don't have this in our new district.

This school was a great start for my son Mitch. He gained not only knowledge but trust and respect from everyone involved with Kenwood from the principal down to the recess aides. The leadership at Kenwood is outstanding and they all work together to meet the common goals of the school and believe me those are high standards they set for themselves and their students. They don't give anyone a free ride nor do they ignor the ones who need help. This a great example of teamwork that my son and I benefitted from for 4 years. Kenwood is the right decision if your looking for a quality school with quality people for your child. We were sad to leave but their input gave us reassurance about the next school we were heading into. Thanks Kenwood and Marybeth!

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Indiana used the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus (ISTEP+) assessment to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English/language arts and math, grades 4 and 6 in science, and in grades 5 and 7 in social studies. The ISTEP+ is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Indiana. The goal is for all students to score at the passing level on the test.

Our rating (from 1 to 10) reflects a school's overall performance. The higher the rating, the more likely the school will prepare your child for the future, so choose an above-average school (8-10) if possible. For average schools (4-7), do careful research and look for evidence that the school has high-quality programs. For below-average schools (1-3), take caution; a low-performing school may not provide the instruction or environment your child needs to learn, and you may need to supplement classroom lessons at home.

Academic rating

The academic rating is made up of equally-weighted parts: students' test scores, their academic growth (for elementary and middle schools) and their readiness for college (for high schools). The graphs below compare this school's results in each area to other schools in the city and state. Growth and college readiness ratings are coming soon, pending publication of 2012 data.
