This is an excellent school who has accepted the mandate of taking minimal resources and make sure the students succeed. They have done so much so, they are the highest ranking school ( elementary, middle, or high school) in the school city. That being said they are still striving to maintain and improve in the face of the reduction of resources. As a side note, I wish parents would understand that they are the advocate for their own child and teachers are not allowed to do so.

I graduated from this school in 1957. It had the most excellent teachers, most of whom I remember vividly. If anyone has the information I'm looking for, could you please email it to me? I want to know who the teachers were and what grades they taught, My kindergarten teacher was Miss Hogue and my first grade teacher was Miss Allen. Sincerely, Mary Beth Hirsch (Domke)

Teachers are working hard with students in order to bring up test scores. In the past two years, we have jumped up two levels according to No Child Left Behind.

Lafayette, and all of Hammond Public Schools need one thing the most, transportation. For most of the children attending Lafayette School in the Turner Park area have a long way to go to get to school. As you can see buy the studies shown, 100% of the children here meet the income guidelines for free lunch. What does that mean, that that have low to mid-low incomes. These children have to walk busy streets daily to get to school if your child does not have transportation, railroad tracks, and main avenues included. The crossing guards are placed as strategically as they can be, but mind you these are K-5 grades. Also, the Hammond Public Schools needs to come to terms with the Hammond Public Transportation as it is not fesable to gain a monthy bus pass for mother and child for low income families.
