This is our third year at Forest Glen and we love it. Our son is in the full immersion program and it is amazing how much Spanish he has learned in three years. The school provides a wonderful multi-cultural and racially diverse environment that we wanted for our children. Families are involved in the school and we couldn't be happier!
They have one of the most diverse programs I have seen. They truly welcome each student and help them become their personal best.
My kids LOVE school. This is our first year there and we feel like part of the family. The entire staff is willing to assist. They address your concerns immediately. And the curriculum...words can't express. My firends loved this school and it came highly recommended now I see why. In a word Forest Glen can be defined as 'Extended Family' okay that's two :) I love my children new school and they do too.
I love Forest Glen because of the dedication and support that the teachers demonstrate. Everyone that I have come into contact with has been nothing but supportive towards my sons and I and I really appreciate feeling like they are going the extra mile for all of their students.
Forest Glen Elementary School is a great school for my daughter to attned. She is learning spanish and expanding her 'big words!' My wife and I are very pleased with Forest Glen and wish all the best in the years to come.
The school is much like a family to me, my daughter loves getting up in the morning and going to school.
There are so many great things about our school that it is hard to pick one thing, but I really, really love the feeling of belonging that happens there. Everyone is treated like family. We are very fortunate to have a diverse population, and everyone there is learning a Spanish as a second language.
I love Forest Glen! I have 2 children in Global and 1 in Immersion. My husband and I feel as if we have won the lottery by going to such an awesome school in a public school system. The atmosphere in the school is exciting. There is so much learning going on about the world. My kids LOVE going to school everyday. All the teachers are there because they love what they do not because it is just a paycheck. The parental involvement is overwhelming. And the principal and her staff are always avaliable if needed. I wish my kids could be there forever.
My child was accepted into Forest Glen and I went in for a tour before the school year. I was a bit disappointed in what I saw in the classrooms. To me, it appeared to be a bit chaotic. I saw a lot of children running around, horsing around, etc in their classes, during class time, not recess. The kind of play I saw should be in the playground. I decided not to send my child to Forest Glen. However, I do know several children that go there and the parent and children both love the school.
I have 2 children (1 in global, 1 immersion) who have completed their 1st year at FG and I am extremely impressed w/ their progress! The faculty really care about&respect the children. My son's Spanish teacher was wonderful about challenging him to reach his full potential and he excelled! My daughter(Kdgn-immersion) started off a little frustrated, however, it is essential that you work closely w/ your child's teacher and learn the curriculum so that you can help them at home. Tutoring for parents/child is readily available.Math pentathlon was great for my son (1st gr.global). The PTA puts on numerous events throughout the year to raise $$ for new playground equipment, they even let the kids decide which they wanted. My children are well-rounded, diversified, and respect all. When the Watoto Children's choir from Africa performed for the children, they were moved! I want my children exposed to such diveristy!
Forest Glen is a remarkable school. We have two children in the immersion program and they are doing very well. My oldest child was reading at a 9th grade level of English in 4th grade. There are studies that document children who learn a second language at an early age do excel and pass their peers in many areas, especially standardized tests. The program is not for all kids, unfortunately some parents will not take their kids out of the program when it is recognized by the teachers that the child is struggling. The teacher are a cut above any public school teachers I have seen, they care about the students and the parents are very involved in their childrens education.
We have had two children pass through this program and are very happy. The poster above, although entitled to their opinion are not in line with the hard facts. Thirty Percent of the students in Immersion went on to participate in honors English in the 6th Grade. When looking at ISTEP scores, the Immersion population as a whole out performed the mean for the township and showed significant separation. The program is not only producing bi-lingual kids, but also excelling in other areas, including English. The program is not for every student and the faculty does a nice job of identifying who should seek other alternatives. Immersion has been around for over 25 years, so I would hardly consider the kids Guinea Pigs. It is a great program and offers unique opportunities.
My children are in the global studies program at Forest Glen and we just love it. Along with a regular elementary curriculum, the children have Spanish classes each day. Also, the children continuosly study foreign countries. The knowledge my children have gained about other peoples, cultures, etc, is invaluable. Another bonus has been that whenever one of my children needed a little extra help (with reading or math), the school automatically offers free tutoring. This is what is meant by 'no child left behind.' This school also offers ESL classes for students who need it. It also offers Spanish classes for parents who would like to be able to speak to their children (aiding schoolwork).
Forest Glen has a spanish immersion program which is not successful for many of the students. The goal of the program is to totally immerse the children in spanish until fourth grade, creating bilingual students lacking no skills in english even though the don't teach english. The students skills are suppose to be equal in both english and spanish leaving no student to fall behind. This program is not teaching students to read and write the english language. Many parents have had to use outside tutoring to bring their children up to grade level in english. They are also tutoring in spanish because the children are struggling. It's not fair to use the students as guinea pigs until the school figures out how to make the program work. The children have to work far to hard and the program is not doing what parents were told it would do.
