Well, I'm a student of Lakeland High, a senior in fact, and let me tell you. Since I'm in Special ED., I don't suffer from too much hard work but my parents (like some people reviewing the okay "rat-hole" of a school Corp.l) said the school doesn't have money to support separate buses for the Special ED. kids from the others, separate buses for both Middle and High School students (yes, both Middle and High schoolers ride the same buses), good tasting food, amongst others. To make matters worst, they added (tax money-wasting) programs to "help" students pass but with mixed results. To wrap this up, Lakeland is a school of both a rat-hole and a blessed place
As a former student, Lakeland was a great school at one point...And then they got the New Tech school and the school has completely gone in a downward spiral. Every assignment, project or anything is done in groups. Individual grades are determined by the groups productivity. Do I think surrounding schools are better? YES! Westview is a better school and many students are transferring from Lakeland to go there. If LL would just go back to way things were AND new management (aka:Administration) it would be a thriving school. BUT, don't look for the school to change in the near future. Millions of tax monies have gone into the Tech School and it's still in the early years of conception at LL. Underachieving students will continue to make those who want the best grades possible do all the work, bright students will continue to transfer to other schools and at some point, lord only knows when, Lakeland will face the fact that administration messed it all up! Good luck!
I am a freshman at Lakeland High School. Recently they put in a new system of education "New Tech". We learn through projects and group work. We have some content grade, but content has certainly shrunk compared to traditional school. We all got computers, which has really helped me do better in school. There is a few "New Tech" classes that I enjoy, where I learn. And then there are the ones that don't teach me anything.. Example: For more credits they put World Geography/English together to form a block class so we could obtain more credits. That's good, right? NO! Unfornately, in this class we learn 80% in World Geography and 20% is English. I have asked upper classmen abou their "New Tech" course which combined Art History/U.S. History/Music History/English all together for more credits. Same problem in this class. How does Lakeland expect us to thrive in college when we learn so little amount of English. I've talked to friends for other school with traditional learning. Guess what they're doing? Learning how to write papers. An essential part of college, and life. Do you think someone is going to hire us if we don't have good grammar. This is something that we need to learn!
I think most of the teachers in the Lakeland School Corp are amazing and don't get near enough credit. Give me a new ADMINISTRATION and I'd be much happier. The stuff they on is crazy and I'm EXTREMELY tired of NO communication. They say they want parents to be involved but nothing could be further from the truth. Parents are never allowed to have input on their childs education. Administration shoves it down our thoats AFTER they have decided what is best for our children. Our school board??? Yes, we voted them on and we can vote them off. I can't wait to cast my next vote! My low rating is based on the Administration and not the teachers.
leadership: c+ teachers: A- other staff members: B challenging?: not really The entire school system was morally bankrupt back when I graduated in 2007. Teachers were pressured by administrators to pass failing students....but once the state or anyone important found out, those teachers were fired....they were amazing teachers too. A good chunk of the student body disrupted class and other proceedings which, for students like myself, made it a hard learning environment...I would say that Lakeland could be a successful school district if the administrators were more like the teachers...the administrators are more about politics and 'the show' and do not care about the welfare of the students, only that the dress code is up to par and everyone passes the ISTEP. I am in the process of becomign a certified teacher and have been in many other schools and seen their operation, and LLSC is low on the totem pole...teachers save them.
We have three children who have attended Lakeland High School, and grew up in LaGrange. Lakeland actually offers quite a few opportunities for a variety of different children. There are opportunities to participate in sports, drama, band, debate, and other extracurricular programs. The classes are challenging and the teachers are supportive. Our two children who have graduated have gone on to extremely successful college lives and prominent careers. Our last child is still currently attending high school and is also reaping the benefits of their great programs. It irritates me that someone has such a strong negative view because our children could not have been more successful if we lived in a large city and paid gobs of money to send them to a private school.
Lakeland High School has a poor academic program and lacks in principal control and leadership. Lakeland doesn't have the money or ability to support its talented students, and barely enough ability for the 'average' student.
I am not really a parent, but I do attend the school. I really want more to be said then, 'This school is AWESOME.' There is a lot of activities to get involved in. Lakeland loves all their sports, no matter the outcome of the season. Also, Lakeland has their own string of choirs. Everyone in the music department is very serious and only wants to succeed. I give the music department an A+ because we always do a great job. There is so much support that every area gets from the parents and the community. The music department always make their own money and a lot of parents come and help with sports and other extracurricular activites. (eg. Speech Team and Spell Bowl) Academically, Lakeland has a decent number of passing students.
