I would like to report that presently I am a school board member of the Michigan City Area Schools, but I have worked in the schools in the past as a School Resource Officer and my oldest daughter graduated from Michigan City High School in 2011. As a parent I was highly pleased with the education that my daughter received and she is in college benefitting from the dual credits she received while attending MCHS. As a lifelong member of Michigan City I am impressed with the educational programs and the dedication of the staff to educate the children. As a school board member I am highly pleased with the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Barbara Eason Watkins and excited about the continued leadership of Principal Wendell McCollum at the Michigan City High School. The future holds nothing but great things for the Michigan City Area Schools and Michigan City High School.

I am so happy to see the leadership of Mr. McCollum and the staff of the High School emerging along with the leadership of Dr. Eason Watkins and her staff. It is awesome to see the number of AP and dual credit classes that our students are offered the past few years. It is definitely great to see the entire staff welcoming parents and looking for that parent interest in the child's education.

I have been following the previous posts and feel I must add my 2 cents worth. Michigan City High School offers an excellent education for those students who want one...my daughter (who is an honors student) would not be going there otherwise. I am impressed at the high number of dual credit and AP classes offered. I get weekly updates/phone calls from the principal. I also get regular emails from the parent organization. They have a great sports program and tons of opportunities for non-athletes to get involved as well (there is a huge list of available clubs and other activities). I asked my daughter as well as some law enforcement officers I know about the claim of 2-3 arrests a day. My daughter states she never sees fights and the law enforcement officers I talked to laughed and said that though there is the occasional arrest it is doubtful that it even happens 2-3 times per month much less per day. I highly recommend students and parents alike get involved in their school and they will be pleasantly surprised.

I am a teacher in the Science Departmen at MCHS. I have only been teaching a couple years, but this is the best school around! I was a student here and I am honored to be teaching the future generations of Michigan City. If I had the option to teach at another school, I would turn it down, because this place is filled with caring, intelligent teacher and staff and filled with inspiring students who want to learn and be the best people possible!! We offer so many amazing programs and classes for all kids. MCHS prepares all kids for greatness!! -Proud teacher at MCHS.

My son is a freshman at the high school this year. I have been completely satisfied so far. The kids are given every opportunity to learn. Teachers always respond to emails within 24 hours and are willing to work with each child to be sure they succeed. The dual credit classes are a definite plus. An education is what you make of it and from what I see every opportunity is there for a student- they just have to work for it. Supportive staff and all the kids seem to love Officer Campbell. So glad he's there to keep our kids safe! McCollum is very approachable and involved- big changes have been made and it's for the better!

I'm I a student and love this school. I'm sad to see that it's closing. I do not understand why the administration would close while they could close Barker or Krueger and move the children into the other vacant rooms. All of the teachers/staff and the students love it. It may have some bad things from the past haunting it but why let it ruin the future? Come on people, lets be honest speak up for the schools you want to stay! Elston has 2 gyms and a pool,it would be awesome to have pool parties for a rewards. An Elston student.

I have two teenagers attending MCHS at this time. The Teachers and administration is doing everything possible to prepare these children for college. Attendance, Behavior, Good Study Habits. Offering so many dual credit classes, Wonderful sports programs and Coaches, after school tutoring by teachers and honor students to name a few positives. The school had an on staff nurse and an Open Door Medical team for any child to use that is ill or just needs to talk to a medical person regarding personal matters. We have a new principal that relates to the kids and actually attends sporting events, even out of town! I would suggest that the Sweep program for tardy students be relooked. I don't see how this is working. Kids go to sweep to avoid a test or if they just sleep to late in the am. At least one get out of sweep pass should be issued each grading period. I'd also like to see Drug Testing of the students and staff. Not just athletes, all students at random.

This school is ok. The attendance policy for tardies does not work because kids like to go to sweep to get outta class or meet up with there friends.

My Daughter is getting a great education at MCHS. She is involved with extra curricular activities and has a 4.0 grade point. The teachers are great through out the schools system. I have never had a teacher not get back to me after leaving them a message. I just wish we had more parent involvement in the school system. As in any school system the more parent involvement the better schools you have. I also had a Daughter Graduate with Honors last year. I believe we had more National Honor winners in the last few years than an other High Schools in LaPorte County.

My son is currently a freshman who came from the private school sector. He is involved in sports, clubs and academic honors classes. His teacher have been challenging and easy to communicate with this year. The administrator goes above and beyond to communicate to the parents.

Michigan City High School has done some outstanding things in the last few year. They have added many dual credit and AP classes, getting staff and students engaged in daily learning plans

The only positive remarks you will read on here are made from administrators. This is a Title 1 school which means that all the disruptive behavior must stay in the class. The corporation targets the lowest of achievers to secure many grant dollars they spend carelessly. Don't even consider Michigan City as an option!

Great opportunities in leadership, athletics, performing arts and etc. Outstanding teachers and classes that challenge my child (honors classes). Also great opportunities for dual college credit from Purdue North Central. Keep up the good work.

Michigan City area schools are horrible they have allowed the Michigan City police department to take over, they are averaging 2 to 3 or arrest a day just at the high school!! the academics are just as bad in 2009-2010 high school had a freshman class of 560, in 2012-2013 only 359 became seniors and with less than 250 of those who actually graduated !!!!!you have left in a 50 percent chance of graduating Wow.I have decided to put my kids in private schools and send them to charter schools when I reach high school level.

I am very disappointed in the lack of education and discipline in this school system. We are constantly dealing with drug sales, fights, bullying, and nothing is ever done about it. You could go to the office and explain how your child is abused everyday by a teacher or student and they will do nothing about it. Absolutely horrible school system overall

My son just graduated from Michigan City High School. He had a terrific experience there. The Parent Network was very active in providing activities for the kids, college info for parents and regular communication with the principal. The best part was the diversity of the students and staff and the positive attitude and acceptance that everyone shared. Lots of great extra-curricular activities, too.

A motivated student can get out of this school what they put into it. Honors and AP classes are available. The students on the sports teams are very supportive of one another. Students who value education and who WANT to can do well and go on to some of the best colleges in the country. It takes motivated not passive parents.

The experience that we have encountered with this school has been horrible. I would not reccommend this school to anyone. I would also encourage people new to this area, to check out this system before coming to michigan city indiana.

Class of '10!! :) Last year, when I was a freshman, i definately got pretty scared when we had threats for shootings and gang fights, etc. At first, administration at MCHS wasn't doing anything about these types of problems. This year, they have finally stepped up. We, the students, actually feel more secure this year. MCHS does, however, need to crack down on bullying. I used to hate coming to school because of bullying. Now, I get along with a lot of people, so it's okay now.

Student, Class of 08 - Yes, at one time discipline WAS bad, but now that's not the story. Actually, it seems sometimes we may have some rules that are TOO strict... (Well, strict for us, nothing as strict as private high school.) Regarding disciplinary problems we sometimes face here, (which are usually blown out of proportion), just realize that if you hang out with the right crowd, take the right classes, and participate in extra curricular, you will excel and have an amazing, memorable time. To the parents that are groaning - it takes a few calls to get information. Usually the embarrassing parents that don't get anywhere are whining at the front desk for 2 minutes about god knows what, not being specific on their story, or not hearing the school's side out. There's a parent group. Get involved if you really care about what's going on and want information.

I walk the halls daily, I see what goes on, I know what it's really like. Parents don't because they don't go here, they probably couldn't even if they tried because the staff would stop them. It would be a disgrace if all the parents saw how this school is really run. Sure we have a few good teachers and dedicated staff members, but for the most part, it's sad.

I am not a parent at this school, but I do attend. I am now a Senior at MCHS. I just transferred here last year, and I love it. I was automatically welcomed by everyone: the faculty and students. I have gotten into many activities for only being at MCHS for one complete year. I take honors classes and they are hard and give me the push to succeed more. I think MCHS helps with the real world b/c there is a large diversity there. The school has many opportunities for one to excell. They do not judge you b/c of your parents or anythign else besides who you are. I love MCHS!

This School has no communication system for parent's,academic's,or sport's program's.It's the old pass the buck system. No matter what a parent's question is,it's allway's some one else's job. It's an endless maze, allway's refered to some one else. Then after 3 or 4 time's around the circle, you begin to understand that no one will assume the responsability for getting the job done.Children learn more by the example they see than what they are told.Just like in their home.C'mon staff & educator's,don't take take this as your day job.But as an opportunity to shape our future! For those of you who are dedicated staff& teacher's.You must really get frustrated in the system, but please don't give up.You are the one's the student's{our future}really need. The one's for whom it's a paycheck,a little effort please?

Our school is out of control on disipline. There is no comunication with parents. No fallow up information is given to parents after bullying insidents or a assult/battery of student by another student. Lots of students feel this is not a safe place to be unless you can latch on to 'friends' that will protect you because no one in authority will.
