My son attended 2nd - 5th. Everything about the school is fantastic. Ms. Jones (principal) is professional & promotes team work & leadership among staff & students (she even works in the cafeteria everyday.) My son's teachers were Ms. Bell, Ms. Shireman and Mr. Neidiffer. They should all be awarded high honors for the life skills (as well as academics) that they teach the children. Ms. Finn (school counselor) does very well at building rapport w/both students & parents. These professionals (including janitoral, cafeteria, art, etc) are so fantastic that I did not even know until the end of the school year that they were working w/o a contract & the union asked them to stop participating in after-school activities. They still didn't - they were more concerned about the students than themselves. Bravo to Slate Run!

My daughter has attended kindergarten and first grade at Slate Run. She loves it there. We are satisfied with what she has learned in her 2 years there. The only complaint I have is that she had well over 30 children in her class and there was not enough one on one interaction between teacher/teacher's helpers and students.

My daughter attended 1st grade at Slate Run Elementary. At first I was a little worried about the handwriting skills they were teaching. I now believe that my daughter is more prepared for cursive writing than before. My daughter went from a reading level B to a reading level G. Mrs.Murphy did an excellent job teaching my daughter. We have now moved into the Henryville school district and I must say I'm really worried about it. SRE is an excellent school. The principal is well involived and the teachers are wonderful. They really want all the children to do well. I wish my daughter could attend SRE..

Slate Run is an excellent school. The teachers are really great. Everyone from the Principle to the ladies in the lunch room are great. They all know every child, are very friendly and always there to help. I feel my kids could not be going to a better school. It was a great suprise when we moved here from a small town. The first time I walked in I felt very welcome.

I think it is a shame that the parents at Slate Run Elementary are not rating the school. I believe it is the one elementary school that takes great pride in teaching our children. I have yet to hear of a unsatisfactory teacher. My children are getting the best one on one treatment and I believe it is because of the enrollment size of the school. They are filled to their capacity and I can guess why. Many students are not even in the school district but the parents want their children at Slate Run because of its great reputation. So come on parents and support Slate Run. Rate it here for all other parents to see.

My child attended the part time kindergarten class last year and I felt that he didn't benefit from the curriculum; though no fault of the school. In my opionion, the teacher was absent many times and didn't appear to have great organizational skills with the class preparation. He attended Art and Music class on Tuesdays and had many 'works' and songs to present to his parents throughout the year. Also, Gym class was on Tuesdays and he learned many motor skills and physical development in the class. As full time working parents our involvement was limited but we did attend a field trip and all school programs. The Principal, Mrs. Sharon Jones, is excellent and very hands on with the students and the parents. Very warm reception from her each encounter.

I attended Slate Run from 1st to 6th grade and I loved it!! The teachers there are very good. They really care about you and do whatever they can to help you learn. I just recently started middle school and I would do anything to go back to SRS!! And by the way, Slate Run has got about the best principal any one could ask for. Go Gators!!! *SRS Graduate 2004*

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Indiana used the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus (ISTEP+) assessment to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English/language arts and math, grades 4 and 6 in science, and in grades 5 and 7 in social studies. The ISTEP+ is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Indiana. The goal is for all students to score at the passing level on the test.

average

Our rating (from 1 to 10) reflects a school's overall performance. The higher the rating, the more likely the school will prepare your child for the future, so choose an above-average school (8-10) if possible. For average schools (4-7), do careful research and look for evidence that the school has high-quality programs. For below-average schools (1-3), take caution; a low-performing school may not provide the instruction or environment your child needs to learn, and you may need to supplement classroom lessons at home.

Academic rating

The academic rating is made up of equally-weighted parts: students' test scores, their academic growth (for elementary and middle schools) and their readiness for college (for high schools). The graphs below compare this school's results in each area to other schools in the city and state. Growth and college readiness ratings are coming soon, pending publication of 2012 data.
