I teach an extracurricular, after-school class for students at this school as I do for other schools throughout northwest Indiana and I can always tell in about two minutes just how dedicated the day-long teachers are to teaching and maintaining appropriate discipline in their school ... This is a school that plainly has a dedicated and consistent day-long teaching staff as well as administrators who expect the best in their teachers and their students (as well as the custodial staff since this is a very clean school in one of the older buildings I teach at) ... the students are respectful and adhere to instruction from me quite willing ... they are enthusiastic and interested and while the subject i teach can be a bit tedious at times, they give their best effort ... as with any group of students who just finished a day of school and are ready to explode into their after-school lives, they do on occasion have an extra energy that needs to be reigned in but it doesn't require more than a simple reminder from me and they are back on task This is obviously a well-run school with educators who care and give their best to their profession, their students, and their school.

I can't say that this is true for all the teachers in at this school, in fact I know that not to be the case. However for my child, who struggled with reading when we asked for help from the teacher and the principal, we were told that he wasn't the lowest of the low. No help was given until we went to the administration office. Once we went to the administration office our child was pulled for a skill that wasn't the issue.

Even though my daughter has been out of this school for a while I was very happy with everyone there from staff to volunteers. She was happy there. I would like to thank the entire staff for a job well done.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Indiana used the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus (ISTEP+) assessment to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English/language arts and math, grades 4 and 6 in science, and in grades 5 and 7 in social studies. The ISTEP+ is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Indiana. The goal is for all students to score at the passing level on the test.

About the tests

Indiana uses the A through F School Grading System to assess the overall performance of a school. For the 2011-2012 school year, schools were graded based on performance and participation levels in state standardized tests and student growth using the Indiana Growth Model. In addition, high schools were graded on four-year (on-time) graduation rates and college and career readiness indicators including Advanced Placment exam results and industry certification exam results.

Our rating (from 1 to 10) reflects a school's overall performance. The higher the rating, the more likely the school will prepare your child for the future, so choose an above-average school (8-10) if possible. For average schools (4-7), do careful research and look for evidence that the school has high-quality programs. For below-average schools (1-3), take caution; a low-performing school may not provide the instruction or environment your child needs to learn, and you may need to supplement classroom lessons at home.

Academic rating

The academic rating is made up of equally-weighted parts: students' test scores, their academic growth (for elementary and middle schools) and their readiness for college (for high schools). The graphs below compare this school's results in each area to other schools in the city and state. Growth and college readiness ratings are coming soon, pending publication of 2012 data.
