School Official Point of View

Here at Myers, we are committed to providing the most meaningful educational experience possible for our kids. Our goal is to enable students to understand the world around them and the talents within them so that they can become fulfilled individuals and active, compassionate citizens. Myers Elementary School offers a rigorous curriculum for grades K-5. Our focus in teaching, learning and assessing is to be innovative. We are working hard at creating learning opportunities that enable our kids to grow their natural sense of curiosity and creativity. We want our kids to reason rather than memorize, and we want them to discover learning through collaboration and conversation; rather than through us simply giving them the information. Here at Myers we believe it is important to BE NICE, WORK HARD, and NOT TAKE SHORTCUTS. We want our kids to develop GRIT (the ability to see things to the end and get up and go after it even when they are knocked down.) We believe that if our kids are nice, work hard, show grit, and "put in the work," then they will have a far better chance to live a fulfilled life and be active, compassionate citizens NOW and FOR LIFE. Myers Elementary School is committed to providing the best educational experience for all of our students. We take tremendous pride in who we are, who we serve, what we do, and what we are all about. We expect greatness from ourselves, our kids, our parents, and our community. We stop at nothing to provide our kids with the best. We strive to add value to their lives, each other's lives, and the lives of those who call Myers their "school home."

Amount of homework: no rating

We believe homework is solely for review of skills that have been taught and practiced countless times in class with teacher input, review, and feedback. What is sent home as homework should be "stuff" kids can do without parent help. All we ask the parents to do is create a "sacred" time and space for homework to be done; and then, review the homework for accuracy after the student has completed it. We apply the homework research supporting 10 minutes per grade level (so, 4th grade would have 40 minutes max because 10 x 4 = 40), and homework is assigned Monday-Thursday.

Every month, our Home School Advisor meets with each classroom twice for 30 minute sessions on understanding and living out the five virtues. These five virtues are: Compassion, Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Fairness. We believe this character education puts the Myers Mission Statement, "Together, we positively educate the heart and mind," to action. While academics are certainly the focus at school, we want to go a step further and instill the five virtues into the students at an early age. The idea is if they can learn about, understand, explore, and put the virtues to action now, they will grow into adults who are mindful of how what they say and do affects others. Our hope is that the S.T.A.R.S. program will positively affect the individual students, their classrooms, their families, and the community as a whole.
