Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I have been at Discovery for three years and I am greatly impressed by the families, teachers, staff and administration. Discovery continues to be one of the top schools in the state due to the dedication of the Discovery community. It is sad, however, that some parents think that because it is a school of choice, they do not have to follow the rules in place for their child's safety. The previous reviewer has not presented a true representation of the school. The volunteer policy, available on the website, is in place for the protection of all of the students. The $1 dress down days are used as a fundraiser to help lower the price of the yearly middle school trip to Washington D.C. There is an excellent volunteer art program in place that comes into the classroom twice a month. As far as the principal dressing as a clown? I have not seen that one. However, I have seen him dress as The Conductor, The Lorax, Waldo, a hot dog and freeze in a Fall Fest dunk tank. Discovery is an amazing school and I feel privileged to be a part of the community that has been created there.

I agree with the parents review about the ruling families of Discovery & how money orientated It is.The form asking what you could contribute was out of hand! The new principal also likes to ignore issues. I am very unimpressed with him and the lack of organization is rampant! If you are not checking your email hourly you'll miss a lot of info, a lot of emails come the same or next day or they completely fail to share important info at all. Example; Holiday party several people weren't allowed in due to lack of a back ground check but nothing was sent out letting parents know to check their status so they could attend the party. Also there is no art program in place. individual expression is frowned on even though the principal dresses like a clown. The dress code has become a big focus this year and they claim its so there is no problem with the rich and poor competing with fashion, yet they charge a dollar for dress down days? Which is a two fold problem 1. if you don't have a lot of $ then how can you pay? 2.what sort of message does charging a child to be themselves send? There are many things that needs improving and the schools communication skills is # 1 on that list.

Another Year... And our 7th grader... still LIKES going to school.( No not getting up.). but going in and coming out... he is smiling! His scores are very good. The teachers know HIM... he is not just a number. They are invested in his education.. It's an outstanding environment, with outstanding, staff, outstanding kids & families. A WOW SCHOOL.

We are in our third year at Discovery and love so many things about it - high academics, dedicated and creative teachers and especially a friendly atmosphere. The new leadership at the school is doing a lot to strengthen the unique aspects of the school's mission. Our kids are thriving and we are so excited about the future of the school! It keeps getting better every year!

The concept was great but the reality was just ok. We saw no place-based learning and very little outside environmental learning. The focus was on test scores, competition, and punishments/rewards...just like the other public schools in the area. At first, we thought the school needed more time. We also thought the new principal would be a positive change. After three years, we ve seen no steps taken to achieve the place-based, hands on, differentiated, environmental learning promised in their website.

I have 2 children at Discovery and they are both doing really well. My oldest has been at the school for 3 years and has had great teachers every year. Academically, he is challenged and also supported. My youngest is in Kindergarten and is also having a great year. We love the consideration for the environment and well as the outside learning. I've also had great experiences communicating with the school and teachers. Overall, we could not be more pleased. We're excited to see the growth of the school and look forward to more great experiences.

I feel so fortunate to have my two sons attending Discovery Charter. I just think it is amazing to have a Place Based Learning philosophy as an option here in NW Indiana. They are learning by "doing" not sitting in a class memorizing. We love the emphasis on individualism, creative thinking, the process of learning-not just the end means, that teachers are committed to the uniqueness of the philosophy, the focus on sustainability, that our two boys feel part of something greater than the individual, that the faculty addresses/responds quickly when needed, that parents are welcome in the classrooms to help, that there is a sense of community even though we are 3 years young and have a 50 mile radius of families attending. I love the feeling that we are all in this together and all are committed to seeing this little school flourish. My boys are excited to learn, they are excited to become stewards of their environments, they feel cared for and confident at DCS. As parents we are impressed by the lunch service, offering meatless options. Non GMO, organic when possible, low sugar, local when possible, no hormones, etc. This is all way ahead of other schools. We feel lucky.

This is our second year at Discovery Charter School and we are very pleased with our experience so far. They are committed to seeing the students as individuals and work with them as such. It's refreshing to be welcome in a classroom and have open and consistent dialogue with my sons teacher. I highly recommend considering DCS!!!!

We have been very happy at Discovery. Our kids all love it. The teachers provide individualized attention and really care about our kids. The atmosphere is friendly and parents are always welcome in the building and the principal knows our kids by name. There are ample opportunities for parents to get involved and the parent-led PAC does a lot to create a great school life - - fall fest, movie nights, pancake breakfasts.

I think previous parent is disgruntled... This is an AMAZING PLACE... The first week of school a child had in school suspension just for saying a bad word. They nipped it in the bud quickly..

Three more students pulled out of Discovery this month due to the administration and boards inability to deal with the "bullying issue" that has been a chronic problem at this school since the doors opened 3 years ago. Then, parents just got an email requesting a count on how many Students will or 'wont' be coming back in 2013. This dose not instill a lot of confidence in parents about the future of our school. My child will not be returning.

We've been very happy with the faculty and staff at Discovery. Our son's kindergarten teacher quickly noticed that our son was getting a little lost in the shuffle. He attended a "friendship class" with a few other kids, led by the school social worker and it really made a difference. She also noticed that he was having trouble following verbal directions and that he needed visual clues to help him understand. Her quick and thorough attention helped him SO much and he is now thriving. We are so grateful that he didn't just fall through the cracks.

My son went to K in a public school in Portage, after a few months into the year we knew we needed to find something different for him for 1st grade. We started the waiting process at Discovery and before he was done with K we knew he would be a Discovery student the following year. Now in our 2nd year at the school, happy doesn't express how we feel about our choice for our sons education. With every school there are bumps along the way, its how the staff and parents handle the bumps that counts and I would rate Discovery's performance as an A+! My daughter will start K at Discovery next year and she is so excited! That's how it should be, kids should be excited to learn, they should be excited about school and learning and I TRULY believe that the Discovery Family (faculty and families) help provide that for every student who walks through those doors. I have recommended Discovery to several parents, and am so HAPPY to say that they are now proud Discovery parents as well!

The school has its great points, average points and then its low points. Great would be the idea of eco-green learning, more hands on and outdoor time. Average would be the extra help when a child is struggling or just not getting enough special assistance for learning problems. Low would be teachers attire and the clicks that seem to form between parents and teachers. If you expect students in uniforms the I expect teachers not in mini dresses and heals up to their thighs.

On the Website Discovery seems to be a dream but in reality it is nightmare. My children went to this school for 2 years and I was hoping it would get better but it has only gotten worse. The school policies only pertain to some families. This year an email was sent out stating that if you were late picking up your student there would be a charge of $1 per minute. Some families are made to pay and others are not. There are students that where admitted early for Kindergarten even though the office states that is not an option. Discovery did have some amazing teachers but they are now gone. They don't have books and computers are limited. There is a lot of bullying and it is not addressed. Bullying has been a huge issue since the first year. The concept of the school is great but I am sad to say that it is not what it seems.

I have 2 children who have attended Discovery for the last 3 years and I could not be happier with this school. The principal is very hands on with each student and the teachers are absolutely great! One of my favorite things about this school is how much time they get outside, hiking, exploring and learning about the environment around them. I also love the organic, homemade school lunches that are served each day!

Based on recommendations from friends we left private school for Discovery. We soon realized we'd traded one "monarchy' for another. I was not impressed with the teachers. There did seem to be many kids with discipline problems. The concept of Discovery was more impressive than the reality.

Switched my child from a private school. I was worried about math and science skills. My child's ISTEP scores in math and science were outstanding!!! The teachers are very hands on...The only complaint I have is that there is some lack of communication between students and teachers regarding what assignments are due and when. I would definitely recommend.....not an "elitist school" as one review stated.....everyone is welcome...

I have two children who attend this school. One will always find school easy and one who struggles with reading. We switched to Discovery because my child who struggles wasn't receiving help even though we asked repeatedly. What we found was that not only were his areas of concern their first concern, but we found that we were welcome in the building and in the classrooms, something that wasn't smiled upon in our previous school. Not only has my youngest child received the extra support and guidance that he needed to get to grade level in reading my oldest child has been challenged, without reward or paper and pen. Although Discovery is new and there have been bumps in the road we are happy to help pave the path.
