My child attended Hendricks for 2 years, 4th & 5th. He had wonderful teachers and an overall great experience. This school definitely prepared him to be successful in middle school. The school staff as a whole are the most caring and child oriented I've experienced.

My daughter attended this school from 1st through 5th grade. I echo the previous review on the principal and administrative staff being very unfriendly to students and parents. The cafeteria is run like a prison and no socializing is allowed. My daughter did however have some excellent teachers and was placed in the high ability program. Overall, I felt that she received a good education there and was well prepared for middle school.

If you have a gifted child, avoid this school. Kids are held back to the level of the slowest person in the class. Our second grade experience last year was so poor that we now drive our child up to school in Indy. Gifted children are held back to grade level.

Hardly no extracurricular activities at this school. Special events that they do have from time to time are a joke. It took me 45 minutes to get into the parking lot of the school at the last fund raising party that was held for the children who sold candy an entire box of candy. Nothing is ever organized well. Other schools participate in fun days such as hat day, slipper day, etc. Not Hendricks this year because the kids didn't sell enough fund raising candy. While other schools in our area did still do their 'fun days' regardless. Everything is about the money at this school. The principal does not strike me as a kid oriented person. She and the entire office staff are always very unfriendly when you enter the school. I wish my kids didn't have to attend Hendricks.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Indiana used the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus (ISTEP+) assessment to test students in grades 3 through 8 in English/language arts and math, grades 4 and 6 in science, and in grades 5 and 7 in social studies. The ISTEP+ is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Indiana. The goal is for all students to score at the passing level on the test.

In addition, high schools were graded on four-year (on-time) graduation rates and college and career readiness indicators including Advanced Placment exam results and industry certification exam results.

Our rating (from 1 to 10) reflects a school's overall performance. The higher the rating, the more likely the school will prepare your child for the future, so choose an above-average school (8-10) if possible. For average schools (4-7), do careful research and look for evidence that the school has high-quality programs. For below-average schools (1-3), take caution; a low-performing school may not provide the instruction or environment your child needs to learn, and you may need to supplement classroom lessons at home.

Academic rating

The academic rating is made up of equally-weighted parts: students' test scores, their academic growth (for elementary and middle schools) and their readiness for college (for high schools). The graphs below compare this school's results in each area to other schools in the city and state. Growth and college readiness ratings are coming soon, pending publication of 2012 data.
