I go to Clay high school and I love it. All of my teachers have been nothing but supportive and intensely intersted in my academic career. I even had a teacher call my house to make sure I was ok when he thought I wasn't myself in class that day. When looking at SAT scores Clay has the highest in the area, because if you are willing to learn this school has educators more than willing to nurture your talents. What few problems Clay has I feel are a direct result of the parenting and culture of these students. Even if a student does not have passing ISTEP scores, it is apparent that she is a compassionate person through activities such as helping hands, the canned food drive, and kindness shown to the students with disabilities. I would suggest anyone going to Clay enter the AP program for the best academics.

I have two children that are juniors at Clay and I would recommend this school to any parent. All schools have their issues if you look. Their are a couple teachers that are there to just do a job but most of the teachers and staff really care and will go the extra mile to help any student that needs it. With that being said it's not the schools job to be the kids parents. If the parents don't get involved and help the school and their child then what do you expect to happen. I don't agree with every policy the school has but I do understand they are doing one of the hardest jobs on the planet with little resources. The acedemics and after school programs are there if the parents and kids what to use them.

Hi, I currently attend clay high school and I must admit that Clay has its problems, but I know that if I went to a school with no problems, I would be completetly unprepared for my life ahead. As far as people switching their kids to different schools because of disiplinary problems, obviously the parents should be a little more conncerned about how to handle their kids themselves, let alone send them somewhere for someone else to handle them. And if your strong enough to hang out with the right people and not let yourself fall into pressure, you will learn many valuable lessons at clay.

I loved going to this school cause i got the most help i needed here then at any other high school most people say this school is a bad school but like any other school a school year is what you our your Student make it. The academic programs here are cool, the arts and sports for the extracurricular activities are nice to football was and still is my favorite extracurricular activities. All i have to say is you make you high school exasperates what you make it jest cause other people are being studied don t mean you have to be, and just cause people are being studied don t make the school its self bad

I do not recommend sending your child to this school! My son just graduated from clay and we were not at all impressed. Very unorganized. Teachers didnot communicate with parents. My son would tell me of several fights a week. tried to talk to counselers but would always be put on hold for 40minutes. Not too many academic programs. We had to move out of the district to send our other children elsewhere.

Clay High School is a GREAT place. I attend this high school and it is not as bad as some other South Bend community schools. I think it is one of the better schools to go to. I have not had a single problem out of the school system. Yes, Clay has some problems, but what school doesn't? The students here are very helpful and the staff is very resourceful. I back Clay 100%. I would recommend Clay above any other South Bend School.

Even though the school doesn't have a very good repuation, i go here and i love it. I know the school has a lot of problems with fights and behavior but i mind my own business and am able to go along the day without all that bothering me.

I think Clay High School was a good school, from personal experience. I, myself graduated there 2 years ago. I think that the staff can only do so much, but the students are getting crazier and crazier every year, and it has alot to do with the parenting also. The school is trying to adjust to the needs of security and the students. My teachers were great and they did the best they could. I was living on my own and managed to get up and go everyday and stay interested. Alot of the discipline depends on the student themselves and their home life. I am currently doing a military tour and i wanted to look back and thank everybody at Clay High School for making me who I am. I personally believe in public schools, it prepares you for the real world.

I would not recommend Clay High School to another parent. Clay is very unsafe, a lot of drug deals, smoking, and illegal activity go on there every day.

I have been happy with the quality of the education, the opportunities (anything you are interested in you can just sign up and do) and the spirit of the school. The canned food drive is a wonderful experience and just one example of the spririt of the kids.

I think CHS is a very safe enviroment, they currently have 8 security gaurds and a police officer.

On the contrary, I have found Mrs. Warren to be one of the very strictest principals in the South Bend system. She and Mr. Ross keep a tight lid on the school. My children have thrived at Clay and have recently found it to be 'too strict' by their own accord. Sometimes the parents with the difficult children are the ones who are most critical. Think about it!

I think that Clay High School is not a safe environment for my child. Therefore, they will not be returning for their Sophomore year. More security and discipline are needed, including the Principal is not efficient.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Indiana used the End-of-Course (ECA) assessment to test students in middle and high school in Algebra I, Biology I, and English 10. The ECA is a criterion-referenced assessment developed specifically for students completing their instruction in Algebra I, Biology I, or English 10. The goal is for all students to score at the passing level on the test.

Our rating (from 1 to 10) reflects a school's overall performance. The higher the rating, the more likely the school will prepare your child for the future, so choose an above-average school (8-10) if possible. For average schools (4-7), do careful research and look for evidence that the school has high-quality programs. For below-average schools (1-3), take caution; a low-performing school may not provide the instruction or environment your child needs to learn, and you may need to supplement classroom lessons at home.

Academic rating

The academic rating is made up of equally-weighted parts: students' test scores, their academic growth (for elementary and middle schools) and their readiness for college (for high schools). The graphs below compare this school's results in each area to other schools in the city and state. Growth and college readiness ratings are coming soon, pending publication of 2012 data.
