I have become familiar with the school system through several perspectives. As a student I felt and observed that athletics are emphasized more than academics. As a former student I am shocked by the claim that consumer science courses are solely about sex education. This is far from the case and I am curious why this assertion was made! A small portion of the course covers such topics, done in a conservative fashion focused on health and safety. I would be much more concerned as a parent if my child did not receive this information. Alternate lifestyles were not discussed in the course when I took it, but I think it would be a good idea. Sheltering children from reality and how to deal with such issues is an unhealthy and risky way to deal with life.
Athletics over everything seems to be the motto. The size of the band shows this pretty well. When no one in the school other than the band teacher takes an interest of course the program is going to decline.
I think ed-co school teachers are doing a great job. And as far as the athletics side over the academics. If you look back at the history of ed-co in any sport they we not very good at all. today they have both academics and athletics. That is hard to find in small schools. So I think this gives parents something to cheer about on both side.
Athletics above academics seems to be their motto. Its scholastic program took a major decline when the original section of the building was taken down a and new wing built. Due to lack of classrooms, Fitness became required (in addition to PE) for students to fill their year, and remains still after completion. The elective courses for junior high consists of whether you want to be in concert choir or non-performing choir. The caliber of most of the teachers are high. However, the disclosure letter of what is covered in the scope of Consumer Science and Family Values has been misleading, at best. The class is Sex Ed and should be a separate class from Home Ec (required by all students). Do not inquire if Alternate Lifestyle is taught due to the fact that the instructor is unfamiliar with that terminology - even though it is taught.
