This grade school does an excellent job teaching a diverse student body under somewhatr difficult conditions.
Roosevelt has a wonderful degree of diversity in its student population, but the education our son receives there leaves much to be desired. As another has stated, the brightese students are left without much to engage them. Our son, in second grade, found himself so bored with the rudimentary reading and math skills, geared toward remedial students, that his normally exemplary behavior slipped. He's frustrated, angry, confused, and deeply bored, and he acts out to keep himself interested. But when the staff has to worry about tending to children whose families don't even provide the basics -- appropriate clothing, routine baths, proper nutrition -- instead of teaching, the school doesn't have the time to focus on the brighter kids. This school has had to install a washer and dryer to clean up after negligent parents. The school is declining.
We have found Roosevelt to be a wonderful school. The teachers are fantastic and very involved. The teachers and staff make sure that the parents stay well informed of what goes on in the school with email, newsletters and phone calls. They do have many students that come and go, but that is due in part to the fact many of the families are tied to the University Hospital and Research facilities and may only be there for 6 months to a year. I feel that this in many ways has been a benefit allowing the students learn about and become friends with children of all kinds of ethnicities. Our daughter has made many wonderful friends and has been given a fantastic education.
Roosevelt is a school with many disciplinary problems. There are two groups of parents; the extremely involved minority and the uninvolved majority. Many children at Roosevelt come from families where education is a second priority. Thus, much academic time at Roosevelt is spent teaching remedial skills and proper behavior. The staff at Roosevelt does their best for what they have to work with. The problem with Roosevelt is the population of children.
Roosevelt Elementary is an excellent school. There is an incredible amount of diversity, excellent teachers and lots of parent involvement. In addition, the class sizes are small, they offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities and they have a top-notch multi-media center. We feel so grateful that our daughter is able to experience a school as unique as this.
