Bishop Hayes, now known as Saints Mary and Mathias Catholic School, is a small catholic school. We currently include Guardian Angel preschool (ages 3-4), a pre-kindergarten program for those students who just need another year before starting kindergarten, and kindergarten-fifth grade. However, we are expanding and will have a sixth grade middle school next year and will expand to eighth grade in three years. Therefore, we will have grades preschool-8th grade in the 2018-2019 school year. We are very excited to be embarking on this new journey with our middle school students. We provide a challenging education while making sure we are teaching the basic academic skills and then expanding upon that basic knowledge. These basic academic skills include reading, English, spelling, handwriting (both manuscript and cursive), creative writing, math, science and social studies. We do teach religion each day, and while we are a Catholic school, we have many students who are not Catholic, as the parents of those children have chosen our school because they want their children to attend school in a "faith'filled" environment while still being encouraged to meet their academic potential. Our students have the opportunity to participate in band in 5th and 6th grade, the Muscatine science fair in 5th and 6th grade., and all middle school sports will also be available to our middle school students. All students, kindergarten-fifth grade participate in our school masses as readers, ushers, greeters, or choir members and in various assemblies and prayer services throughout the school year. This gives our children the opportunity to develop those public speaking skills, which are so important throughout life. I love teaching at our school, and invite anyone who is considering Saints Mary & Mathias Catholic School to come visit us--check out our test scores, come see our school and see why we love it so much! We are a "family", and if that is the elementary/middle school experience that you want for your child, then our school is the school for you!
